The key is whether or not you have CHINESE QA.

Chinese manufacturing is fine, great even, under an anal retentive quality assurance spectre. Allow Chinese people to QA things themselves, and it all goes to shit.

Not hating on China here, but their manufacturing falls the fuck apart when they are given self-governance as far as quality control issues. They really do NEED some cruel taskmaster to shout at them and say BUILD THIS THE RIGHT WAY FOR FUCK'S SAKE, or what you get is a bunch of out of spec products haphazardly thrown out the door with a dispassionate "fuck it, close enough."

Yes, I'd be fine with that. R&D costs aren't that huge in reality, and are usually inflated by companies for various reasons. There are a few areas where R&D actually is expensive, but they're not that many. I've seen countless patents being filed when there's prior art. A good deal of patents deal with natural evolutions of certain techniques. Techniques which you could have derived yourself without even knowing that a patent is filed. If you don't file it, someone does, and you no longer have the right to implement your invention and have to pay royaltees to that entity. At the same time, you have other companies patenting certain non-unique things, based on well-known technology, making such things into standards, then having everyone pay royaltees to them for using their now 'standard' shared by certain manufacturers in the patent pool. I could list countless such problems with the patent system. For genuinely unique inventions it would be needed, but I suggest you actually look and read the countless patents that are filed and you'll see how little are true genuine inventions. What's even worse is how many of these patents are approved when there's prior art.

In the world of today, it's hard to truly invent things which base on current technologies without accidentally stepping on someone's toes (using patented technology unknowingly).

It's been always like that throughout Hisotry, the underdog always ignores law and morals while catching up.
It may be Japan in the 50s taking technology from the West.
It may be the British pirates stealing from the Spanish ships returning from America.
It may be any organisation employing guerrilla tactics today.

Patents and copyright is getting retarded lately, specially in the US: everyone wants to stop working and profit forever with just the one or two good ideas they ever had. It could be an individual or a big corporation. It gets dangerous in the later case because corporations can lobby to create laws that protect them, like, forever.
This is producing a deceleration in the exchange of ideas around the world (because everybody is in it's own little island/corporation/group).
I refer to "ideas" in the most broad sense: art (true art and entertaiment), technology, and sometimes even science.
We are, in no way, heading torwards a second Dark Age or anything of that sort, but we don't want people in the future to look back at the 20th and 21st centuries and think of all those things we didn't achieve earlier because capitalism turned into some retarded plutocracy.
