Subterranean Animism is the best Touhou game.

The best gameplay and story. The characters are quite decent and the music is superb. Level design is quite boring at some points and the difficulty curve change way too much. The only bad point I can find out of it is that it has the worst scoring system next to EoSD (in my opinion MoF has the best).

Most people think that it also is the game with the worst type of weapons, but they are just really hard to master. The special abilities for each support character add a whole new level of strategy.

I would like to see another game in SA style but with more interesting weapons (UFO) and better score system (MoF). ZUN is just one step behind from creating the best Touhou game that can easily surpass SA.

Hated SA.
Also preferred IN's story.

I would say that in terms of storytelling they are both equally good, it is just that it appeals very different tastes. IN Story is more interesting since the mystery of who is behind the fake moon, but it rather pointless since it was just a ceremony to close the path between the Moon Capital and Gensokyo. (Even though, we later learn that it is even more pointless because of the Sea of Tranquility.

SA Story is more like a "you know they will eventually find the person behind all" but I like it better because it is actually something that puts Gensokyo in danger.

That's why it's better.
90% of all Touhou "fans" have never finished a single game. Hell I bet at least half have never played a Touhou. The less retarded fanon/IOSYS bullshit whatever the better.

>> No.5262092

is there some archive/torrent out there with ALL the games? i've really enjoyed imperishable night and double spoiler but clearly i've missed the best ones.

>> No.5262093

SA has great music, some neat backgrounds, and diverse bombs. I love the cast as well.

Also, fighting a nuclear-powered winged schoolgirl in the depths of Hell.

Does beating PCB on normal after using up all your continues and extra lives count as finishing it? I did the exact same thing with Ether Vapor.

>> No.5262124

I didn't like IN because it was too dark. Mountain of Faith probably has the best background graphics, but Subterranean Animism comes pretty close.

Utsuho design was kind of weird. I remember a lot of people from here saying that it was pretty horrible, but it turned out to be one of most beloved characters.

For something I really like about Touhou games is that the controls are always really responsive.

>> No.5262221

>>5262181
Utsuho just has a lot of little things that are suppose to represent nuclear power, so she's kind of cluttered.

ZUN is eventually going to make a Touhou game wit tap-fire instead of hold-fire.

I didn't like SA as much as PCB or IN. Never was much of a graze whore, and it retained MoF's lame bomb system.

I agree that SA had a decent storyline (compared to the rest), but I aren't really fond of its music.

3rd Eye is good

3rd Eye is probably the best SA song next to Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom.

SA has the best midboss-only character.

That's exactly what IN was: dark. The backgrounds in most levels are a black indecipherable mess.

>or you're saying it's "dark" because it was night?

Yeah, this. Means the backgrounds of stages 1,2, and 4 were kind of murky. Also, what was up with the stage 3 background? It's like you're in an Earthbound battle or something.

Nighttime is supposed to be like that. I could say the same thing about SA's first two levels since you're in a fucking cave.

>>5262342

The shots themselves weren't bad, but the gimmicky abilities were, to a point. I hardly ever used the border ability on Yukari's shot unless I didn't feel like bombing. Suika's made gathering a bit too easy while not providing a powerful shot; even for a homing type it was weak. Aya's ability to move super fast threw me off way more times than it helped.

As for Marisa's....well, I didn't use the dolls much, but I could see how that is useful to a point. It's just harder to manage the spread. Patchy's switch never really found much of a use with me. Nitori's was actually really good, since you didn't waste a whole bomb if you triggered one on an impulse and could end up avoiding everything. Reminded me a lot of the Cherry Border in PCB, and I loved that system.

>> No.5262468

>>5262427
You could say that. But I found the visual effects more interesting in the cave levels than during the night levels.

Also, Stage 3 was great visually and musically.

Spread shot makes Yuugi's level and her laser familiars into a joke. And with Patchy: spread shot for mass-killing, concentrated for bosses.
