Game Theory has progressed quite a bit in the past 40 years. On a computers level, even shmups can compare to chess.

IMHO, Chess is flawed. It implies a setting where you have two equally strong opponents, with exactly the same movements. No such thing as retreating or defensive stances. No siege (I admit that moving towers were used, but they just don't seem to equal the ones used in chess). No destroying the line of supply. No Green pieces suddenly appearing to the aid of Black, etc.
