Depends.
Pixelart basically calls for having the guide alongside in mspaint and count pixels. Every now and then step back and check how it's going and that the colors are right.

For buildings just draft up a rough idea of what you want in your head, then start putting blocks. Step back and see that it looks good, go back and tweak whatever feels 'wrong'. Mostly edges and supports that don't look right in blocky mode.

Pixel art is kind of overdone. Still looks awesome, but it's a huge time investment for something that could have been done in paint. Complex buildings with wings, explorable rooms and such is more fun if you ask me.

Also odd-numbered walls work best for me.. 11 blocks including walls, 9 blocks of buildable space, I like having a single center line instead of a double line for the center.
