I didn't say that they didn't love each other. I said that she becomes violent when he displays affection. She pretty much eviscerated people with her EVO power when she felt he was threatened, by circumstances that she couldn't understand.

He abuses her to maintain the status quo and keep her from becoming too attached romantically, because "master/servant" is something she understands and won't go wild with like she did before.
