Put your speakers on stands so they are at (or close to) ear level when you're sitting on your computer. Speakers on the floor, especially a hardwood floor = shitsux. Any speaker will sound way worse than it should.

Yep, you've got the right idea. Everything should be about ear level (except for a separate subwoofer if you've got one, those are almost always designed to be floor-standing.)

Hardwood floors are bad for sound because they reflect so much of it. Really REALLY anal retentive audiophiles will tell you to put all sorts of acoustic panels all over your room, but 99% of the time a nice throw rug in the center of the room will keep the sound from bouncing around like crazy.

Most of this is moot, though, because average people (and even audiophile jerk offs who spend $80,000 US on a set of speakers) can't tell the difference 99% of the time once your sound setup is "good enough"

I don't mind having one of these once in a while, to see how you guys change some stuff in your room (because yeah, I know most of these rooms). /jp/ is not a fast paced board with lots of new users posting every day. Try posting this every day on /v/ or /a/, you will definitely get new stuff, as their userbase isn't as stable and small as /jp/'s.
