Qualifications...I got pretty good grades, 13 A*-C GCSEs, and three A-levels with decent grades (B+).

I've tried both approaches of being honest about my grades and lying about them (to appear stupid, because entry-level employers prefer people who will never attempt to get a better job elsewhere) but neither worked. I've applied to pretty much every job I've seen advertised that doesn't specifically require a degree or whatever and isn't commission-based sales (this eliminates about 95% of all jobs advertised, but whatever) and I've also applied everywhere where I think they will have jobs available. Sometimes multiple times. I've been through about a dozen different CV approaches and applications are usually just 'Tick the boxes because we know you're retarded' so it's not a matter of being bad at writing applications.

The interviews I had were pretty bog standard and I think I pretty did well except the one time Argos (a furniture/home goods store) gave me an interview around last Christmas. Everyone on the interview list was put in a room and we had to 'roleplay Santa's elves'. Yeahhh. I wish I was making it up, it was so fucking stupid. They gave us problems to solve and we had to solve them 'as Santa's elves' and other stupid shit while wearing elf ears and ugh.

But yeah I think I've had enough time to refine my CV-writing skills. There are just no jobs for people who don't already have several years of experience in paid work.

Let me elaborate further upon what I said about skill.

I agree that if 200 people apply for a job and the only thing that separates them is experience, then it could very well be luck of the draw. Such is probably the case with retail jobs and other entry-level "warm body" positions. However, if you apply knowing you have a shitload of experience, and you nail the interview block, you should know you're already in the top running for the position.

I can't say I'm a stranger to this environment because I had the same problems when I was in my early to mid 20s. It was damn near impossible for me to get a job because I didn't have the experience, skills, etc to land the job. I had to claw my way up every step of the way, but now that I have, it's far easier to get Sr. level positions. No entry-level person can expect to land a job that requires a certain number of years experience, certain level of education, and a particular skill set...That's just common sense.

It just makes it damn near impossible to get a start, especially if you've got no word or mouth contacts in industry of whatever. I've been applying for odd part time and volunteer jobs recently, but even they're getting a ton of applicants. All graduates trying to get a start or bulk up their CV.
