5143558 No.5143558 [Reply] [Original]

A good VN has a story or other quality of itself (ie, not the fandom) that transcends the sum of it's individual parts. For example, a game like Planetarian may be short with no H scenes with no brilliant twists, but it's such a masterpiece of mood, atmosphere, and emotional manipulation that it is able to go beyond the sum of it's parts and achieve greatness. Not all good VNs need to be masterpieces; there are some which are strong in most of the key elements of a VN (story, heroines, music, H, etc) are memorable as quality experiences.

However, games which do not have any transcending quality of greatness or even a net sum of quality cannot be considered "good" VNs. For example, FSN: poor art, convoluted story that is at the same time boring, very poor H, overall a large disapointment in all major areas -- the only area that it stands above the rest in, however, is the fact that it enjoys an association with a powerful celebrity in Japanese VN gamer's world, which was exported to the West via the online fandom here; in reality, no one likes the game per se, but they like fitting in with the "cool" crowd, and eventually it became a cultural underpinning on /jp/. This makes it popular, but it still cannot be called "good".

You may believe it's a ridiculous thing to want to enjoy in an erotic game, but beleive me, not all of them are laughably bad -- just the ones /jp/ talks about all the time.

A major problem in VNs is that the sex scenes are often completely meanigless. Sleeping with a girl has no story implications, and often feels tacked on for the eroge crowd. We can think of these games, essentially, as dating sims with eroge conversions.

Tsukihime amd FS/N are X'd off due to them being God-awful. Umineko is checked because it has achieved greatness; music, characters, and the story, while sometimes bizarre, has given us amazingly entertaining scenes, at least one scene per chapter. C;H, while not great, is still a good -- a solid comicbook type experience that manages to explore a few cool concepts and do it with solid production.

Good vs. Bad RTS games

A good RTS has a quality of itself (ie, not the fandom) that transcends the sum of it's individual parts. For example, a game like Warcraft 3 may not have that many units out at any given time, but it's such a masterpiece micro, macro, and tactical gameplay that it is able to go beyond the sum of it's parts and achieve greatness. Not all good RTS games need to be masterpieces; there are some which are strong in most of the key elements of an RTS (objectives, unique units, story mode, online gameplay, etc) are memorable as quality experiences.

However, games which do not have any transcending quality of greatness or even a net sum of quality cannot be considered "good" RTS games. For example, Starcraft: poor art, convoluted story that is at the same time boring, there are no hero units and the regular units are boring, overall a large disapointment in all major areas -- the only area that it stands above the rest in, however, is the fact that it enjoys an association with E-sport, which was exported to the West via the online fandom here; in reality, no one likes the game per se, but they like fitting in with the "cool" crowd, and eventually it became a cultural underpinning. This makes it popular, but it still cannot be called "good".

Why won't they get that all it does is wear people out a bit?
Seriously, one moment I'm reading series of comments that said that all single player games suck, the next I'm reading something about how all Touhou games suck as do the [insert description of regular /jp/ posters] but that KS and Ouran Highschool Host Club are pretty good.

They're so obviously designed to be things that a great number of people strongly disagree with and there's so many, and so few people actually *care*.

I got my degree in literature and what you're describing is called Reader-response criticism. Basically you feel that a work is good on a personal level and what you get out of a work is what makes it valid.

This is unfortunately a very difficult type of criticism to maintain because every single person will approach a work of literature different than any other; meaning there are 6,000,000,000 different reader-responses to any single work.

While Post-modernism will argue that such criticism is valuable and anything we bring to a work is valid there are many arguments against both Reader-response criticism and post-modernism.

So good luck in convincing the scholarly establishment (or anyone here on /jp/) that your particular response to a work of literature is good and other people's responses are not. On a personal level this is true but according to the critical theory you seem to espouse everyone else's response is equally to your own.

I don't use sage, if I'm discussing in the thread, I want to bump it so I can discuss it with more people. I see no point in letting a thread with discussion in it sink below typical shitposting threads. If no one used sage, besides if the thread was shit, good threads would stay on the first page, and shit threads would sink and die horribly. I understand you can have a 'polite sage', but I don't understand why people on /jp/ do it. And I'm hardly shitposting, it's more just metathread discussion, off-topic.

First of all I would clasify the post as a meaningless post, hence sage.

Your post isn't really great either though and you didnt use sage.

All the Umineko hate comes off as being so hipster-ish. Most of the haters just make these obnoxious one or two line posts with SAGE SAGE LOL.

I rarely ever see any genuine intellectual take downs of Umineko as a VN, probably because there aren't any genuine intellectual people that bother to "hate" it.

I often stand up for "Haters" of things when that thing becomes very popular and shoved in everyone's face; but with Umineko it feels like everyone "Has" to accept it'd a mediocore VN and nobody's allowed to think it's clever.

It reminds me of the Christfag presecution complex; I see far more threads bitching about Umineko being overrated than I do people actually over-rating it.

I don't know why, but /jp/ has become increasingly more hostile and obnoxious towards people of different opinions over the last few months. Umineko hate in particular seemed to explode when Episode 6 was released, because it didn't meet people's expectations. People are still NERD RAGING about it, so their opinions probably aren't honest to begin with.

Yes, but you still haven't explained what the actual point of not bumping the thread is... threads with posts will be kept alive, threads that no one gives a shit about will die, as no one posts in them.

I'm saying that metathread discussion is shit. If you're going to do it, at the very least use sage so that the thread doesn't bump to the top.

It doesn't matter whether I sage or not, really. It just means people will see it, pretty much anyone who gives a shit about this is already in the thread and discussing. But why do people sage threads which are Touhou/Visual novels as a 'polite sage'? I have yet to see the logic behind this explained to me.

Oh, okay then. I just wish I could get a board when I can discuss visual novels without the need for these shit threads born out of the boredom of lazy idiots. It's so hard to find quality threads on /jp/ nowadays.

Learn to make threads instead of 'waiting' for one.
Putting up a 'general vn' thread then mentioning something about one you read usually works well enough.
When you do shit like OP, you see what happens.

>> No.5144402

>>5144336
Basically because there are enough people here to discuss it, bumping it a few posts up won't change much.
It is not really as if a person will go "Hmm, this thread doesn't seem to interest me" and then "Oh, it got bumped, now that changes everything".
They can and probably already have seen the thread anyways, if they didn't join they didn't, lets leave room to other threads, that way more people can be happy.

WHen the next flood of translations are released there will be more threads.

Granted that it was a partial translation, the partial patch of Daibanchou sparked some interest for an example, but only so much can come from a partial release.

I have posted "genuine intellectual" (using this phrase makes you come across as incredibly snobbish by the way) criticisms of Umineko. I don't do it in every Umineko thread because there's no need to announce my opinion all the time. In fact I just hide Umineko threads on sight these days. If I ever say anything bad about Umineko it's just a passing comment in a thread that isn't specifically about Umineko, so I don't want to derail the thread by getting into a "genuine intellectual" debate over it. Not to mention that in the end everything comes down to opinions, which isn't something I like to waste my time arguing over.

>I don't know why, but /jp/ has become increasingly more hostile and obnoxious towards people of different opinions over the last few months.
If you think that then you've only been posting here a few months.

The biggest reason is still the major influx of users from boards such as /a/ and /v/.
The way VNs have started to become more and more mainstream is the biggest factor that comes to mind regarding the quality of /jp/.

It's not.
I saw a very good thread in may yesterday about this very fact.
Looks like the eroge market is only composed of about 500000 people.
During the 90's, it was about 2 millions.
I guess that's why people constantly say that the golden age is gone.

That simply isn't the case, sadly. Most new translations still get ignored in favor of the usual Umineko/TM threads. When ef was released recently the only threads that received any attention were about NNL's trolling. The few threads about the game itself received maybe a dozen replies. More popular games might fill up a few threads and then just fade away.
