Looking at how he discarded 11 honors and terminals from the start of the game, I'd say that the chitoi forced its way into his hand.

Anyway, chitoi is a good defensive hand. You discard safe tiles and keep potentially dangerous tiles for yourself, and having two tiles of a kind sometimes gives you essential information that the opponents don't have.

And if someone reaches in an advantageous position, the fact that you might have safe pairs to discard will give you two turns to draw more safe tiles, sometimes you will even be able to complete your chitoi before your opponent even though you're in betaori mode.

With riichi and no ura dora luck, it's not even mangan, just 25 fu 3 han. Still not mangan even if you ippatsu or tsumo it. Now, if you start mixing in things like honitsu, tanyao, red 5s, dora pairs that's another story. A honitsu chiitoi hand with a dora/uradora pair is baiman and totaly worth going for.

But that same hand could probably easily pon those pairs for yakuhai han, and an extra third dora and have a more flexible hand. You may even be able to drop the honors and change from honitsu to chinitsu, and late kan for extra dora.

I've done exactly this and wound up with a 2222 444 555 77 888 pin hand, 2 pin and 8 pin were dora, plus red 5. Open chinitsu, toitoi, tanyao, dora 6, yakuman. Of course this is mainly applicable to 3p, chiitoi is a lot more valid in 4p games.

If I remember right, in Tenhou, if the same person has declared quads 4 times, the game continues (it does in 3p, anyway). That would mean if you include bonus tiles, you can get a combined dora and ura-dora total of 52.

Either game, Full east and souths. Every single starting hand I got was complete and utter garbage. TWICE I was able to build acceptable hands (hanemans) Only to get cock blocked by yakuhais while iishanten. I say fuck this shit and try some 3p because I am pissed off.

I am able to build a fucking ryuuiishou and suuankou BACK TO BACK IN THE FIRST AND SECOND HANDS.

Seeded rand for shuffled tiles based purely on time and time alone. tenhou would be bankrupt if the game is purely based on randomness. that also would make the game too linear and people will likely make it to higher ranks in a short amount of time. the current 10 dan players, it took them at least 6000 games to get to that level. but i think all 4 of them retired their accounts since they are close to being de-ranked.

there is a "system" that they placed on registered accounts. this includes:

-long string of losing streaks
-long string of winning streaks
-performs a random check on an account before the game starts - one thing for sure, it does look at the player's win%. The highest win % has a low probability to get decent hands and draws. Doesn't mean this player will lose automatically but requires extreme luck to pull off a win depending on the other player's action.
-if you graph out your rating vs games you played, it does look like they use something similiar to the stock market charts. if anyone is familiar with the term uptrend, once that is broken, it's impossible to recover until you stop losing. in stock market terms, it's called "finding a bottom".

you have to play a shit load of games in order to be able to advance to higher rank and maintain your rating to be stable. If you climb up too fast, you will get clawback big time.

The normal lobby does not have this system installed, this is why they recently capped it to 4 dan, 1800 rating.

paying for a premium account will improve your luck but it's only effective against players that did not pay for premium status.
