Faith. It decreases rapidly whenever you're not collecting items or shooting things. Those long pauses between enemy waves will kill your faith if you just stay at the top of the item border. Waiting the longest time possible before picking up the last item on the screen by zipping up to the item border is essential to keep those pauses from hitting your faith much. It requires decent memorization of the stages to avoid getting screwed over by this.

You'll have to remember when all the big pauses are to make sure you have stuff on screen to stop your chain from dropping. For instance at the start you want to keep a few green faries alive until they're on the right of the screen, and collect the faith when it's almost fallen off the screen.

You should also be running straight into nitori and deathbombing if she isn't doing a spellcard as she'll shit points at you, and deathbombing has no faith penalty.

Remember this is the closest ZUN has got to a good score system!
