I've been wondering /jp/

In japanese samurai flicks, do the actors speak archaic japanese appropriate for the edo period, or do they speak 20th century japanese?

Many men would go gay for Mifune

>> No.51270

Naturally, the audience understands Edo-period Japanese without fail.

>> No.51271

I haven't seen one to be perfectly honest, but if you hear "de gozaru" than yes.

>> No.51276

As far as I can tell, they've been speaking 20th century japanese (save for the moder slang) since before the samurai even existed. Which is like.. a thousand years.

>> No.51283

if you hear a lot of "de gozaru", then it is old style japanese

>> No.51285

20th century Japanese

kinda like how a 15th century drama written contemporarily will have some archaisms, if it was totally pre-shakespeare nobody would be able to follow it.

it uses old style words and omits certain words that they wouldn't use then (like 'cool!') so it's appropriate enough to keep up suspension of disbelief.

>> No.51289

They speak a little more archaically, but not in full classical.

You don't hear Mifune saying western style Garaigo, but his characters are usually not the kind to be speaking ultra-formal.

isn't "de gozaru" kenshin's catch phrase?

>> No.51311

This is a probably a question that most Japanese couldn't even answer... for instance, how much archaic english can you speak
so, guessing, 20th century for the most part

Stop posting pictures of Mai Wa- ...Hazubando.

I don't have any old japanese movies on my HDD except for Ran. It it, it seems that they speak in an old style japanese, bu with modern japanese thrown in as well.

Hmmm, kinda like Himura Kenshin in Rurouni Kenshin ?

Obviously they won't be using english loanwords, because most english loanwords are used for objects that didn't exist back then, like "koffe", sanduwitchu, etc.

Engrish?

they only use old japanese for certain aspects of speech that modern japanese realize as being "old japanese". If they spoke in all "old japanese", chances are a lot of people wouldn't understand wtf was being said.

Not to mention that the country was in shambles/separated back then, and there really wasn't a unified language

>> No.51341

>>51301

for the record, Mifune isn't actually japanese.

Not to mention that the country was in separated back then, and there really wasn't a unified language. Kinda like how even today it is not uncommon for someone from kyushu to not understand someone speaking to them from tohoku, etc.

I guess it would be more of a case of formal vs informal, with everyone speaking formally.

Kinda like in the Basilisk anime, using -sama and -dono all the time

>> No.51383

A lot of Japs were living in China at the time, just like there were a lot of Britfags, Frenchfags, and before WWI, Deutschfags.

Yay colonialism.

Anyway, Mifune was always anti-commi and he served in teh imperiyal air force and doesn't afraid of anything.

People didn't speak formally, just because it was the past

in fact if anything, they spoke even more informally than they do today.

He's an ethnic Japanese.

Ethnic groups don't matter at all, the only reason I pay them every credence is because people in the US seem to highly incorrectly confuse skin color with race all the time.

National origin is worth even less than ethnic group, as it means nothing about the person's genome, and in it is misleading for determination which culture someone identifies with, as in the case I quoted.
