I believe that his popularity stems from the fact that,even though he grew up and did nothing but hate his ideal,he still pursued it with all he had and tried his best to realize it. Most people would just give up on them once they've grown a little and never realize or even attempt their dreams from the past because they believe it was ultimately impossible. Archer however strode forward and pretty much got as close to realizing it as he ever will. He worked on achiving his goal from Childhood to Adulthood and even death.

It never became a reality,but the hardwork he put himself through all in order to obtain such a complicated yet simple dream is beautiful.

Honestly, I liked Archer before his epic death in the anime. He's the hardened, cynical, sarcastic smart ass. It's an interesting character archetype.

Also, the bondage pants didn't hurt either.

However, in the VN I actually ended up liking him more because he was more fleshed out. He'd kept his promise to his father even after death but was screwed over for it. Yes, he was dumb not to ask for help during his life time, but that gives him a realistic flaw.

Plus, I enjoy the sort of Batman type characters. Archer's not the most powerful, but give him some time he's able to take out Servants more powerful than him. He killed Berserker six times, by himself, and without using UBW.

That is fucking bad assed.
