What touhou song most effectively epitomizes shit getting real?

Once you hear it you know some serious shit's about to go down.

Judgment in the 60th year does it for me (Yamaxanadu's stage theme in PoFV).

Close runner ups are Okuu's and Byakuren Hijiri's themes. I guess Kanako's and Flan's themes put you in the final-boss moods pretty well too.

Septette for the Dead Princess might be the best song Zun's ever made, but it doesn't emphasize being threatening so much as it does being classy.

tl;dr: We talk about Zun's musical prowess.

Not really, it's really loli-ish and it puts you in a playfull mood, not a "shit just got" real mood, kinda like native faith.

but I definitely have to agree with okuu's and shikieiki's themes.

Shikieiki's theme is the only final stage in which the bullet patterns aren't 100 percent preset.

You go into Hijiri knowing you'll get omen in purple mist first, and to bomb on two of her non-spell cards but PoFV is naturally all improvised.

lol, more like duplicates Ran's spells with slight derivatives (slower but more bullets for instance). I just can't take it seriously.

Oddly enough Mokou has the hardest spells of all EX bosses but her theme pumps me up the least. Even Suwako's theme is rapid, energetic, and fun (albeit not threatening).

Actually, yeah, I really like the effect that song has, too. Faith is for the Transient works kind of okay, but not as well, I think. Border of Life (the Saigyou Ayakashi version) is really great, except I don't like some of the instrumentation at *all*.

Border of Life, Necrofantasia, Touhou Judgment, Lunatic Princess and Nuclear Fusion all do an excellent job setting the tone for their respective fights.

But for me, the most 'boss music' sounding song is actually Tiger Patterned Vaisravana. There's a great build up of energy and it stays intense the whole time.

It's one of the reasons I didn't really like Suwa Foughten Field; it starts with this awesome intensity and then noticeably loses it about a minute and a half in. Not that it's a bad song, but it could have been so much better.

Ancient Temple has and probably always will be the song that goes "shit just got real." I love how the stage is choreographed around the song. Youmu shows up to kick your ass just as the extra layers of arrangement start up.

Kind of wish more stages were built around the arrangement/rhythms of their respective stage music.

ZUN's composition skills are pretty good, especially considering the volume that he puts out single-handedly. Pretty sure he's a programmer by nature, not a musician or artist. Has he even had much in the line of musical teaching?

The arrangement, on the other hand, isn't the greatest. But to change that now would be to change the sound that we've come to expect out of a touhou game. I say let ZUN do his thing, and the rearrangers theirs.
