Like I said - sure there is somewhat of a personality fleshed out by the original creator - but that will never evolve or change, and the things she thinks and does and way you see her is almost always based on what's made up in your head.

Sure character x has a lot of personality and character traits - but just from telling yourself she thinks of you as anything or that you even exist to her is already crossing that border between whats ACTUALLY said character and what YOU are creating. Or even just saying something in a thread like "my waifu wouldnt do that because she's a good girl" is something you're assuming - 3D changes, 2D can't, but if 2D were it's own entity it would change just as fast as 3D and so you have no way of knowing if she really wouldn't do whatever it is.

No matter how well fleshed out a character is, you still have to build-your-own-waifu.

The fact that someone exists is undeniable. That is true for bidimensional characters too. Obviously 2D characters do not exist in the same sense as humans do, but they're obviously there. In my opinion, the implications for this are twofold:

First, I like to think that falling in love with a 2D character equals to loving everything they represent to you, be it justice, purity, devotion, intellect and whatever virtues you may find in her. That's not possible in 3D love because in the real world virtues don't exist in the same level. People may sometimes believe themselves virtuous, but only through the fleeting agreement between them and everyone else they will realize that. Where 2D personas are created to embody the qualities they possess, we humans, must prove to ourselves and everyone else throughout all our lives the qualities we believe we do. It's for this reason that many people this day and age have decided to pursue less strict morals (if they have any at all), since we are forever tasked with the burden to display virtue solely in act.

Therefore we can't love virtues in others, as that equals as loving them in act. I can't love the justice in someone if I don't love justice first. And that someone cannot be loved for their justice if they can't bother to prove their 'justiceness' over and over.

The second reason is, the love for 2D is closer to the purest form of love described by the greeks. I've said that when you love 3D, it is not their virtues that you love. It's their possession. The 3D love is so crushing, so unforgiving, so painful because loving that person means that expect her to love you back. And if that expectation isn't met, you suffer. So, can you really call something that causes you suffering, 'love'? That distinction is something the ancient greek had no problem with, as they had different words to describe love. The love we're seeing here is 'Eros', the force of passion, the impulse of lust and possession that describes 99% of romantic relationships today. That is the love that prefers seeing my loved one unhappy with me than happy with someone else. That prefers seeing my loved one unhappy with someone else if they're not with me. It is a paradoxal love, that does not wish for the happiness of either part.

2D love doesn't fall in the same trap. For, without being in love with the possession we are in love with the idea. If it's true that we live in a world where there are no absolute truths, the one truth that could still hold water is: I love something because it does me good and brings me joy. In 2D I'm outside the infinite loop of expectations, disappointments, agony and suffering. All that matters is that my love for something is there to empower my life, without care for that something being someone that exists as a real person or not.
