Anyone been to Japantown in San Francisco? I'm going to the Viz Cinema later this month for the Haruhi movie and just wondering what that part of town is like, things to see in the area, etc.?

There's not much to it. parking sucks. Weaboos aplenty. Try not to go on weekends cause they show up in cosplay. Shit sucks. They have some decent stores though.

Its not worth making a weekend of but you could defiantly spend a day there. There's not much touristy stuff to do. Just a lot of shopping.

Japan town is very small. 2 shopping centers and a couple of outlining stores and restraints. There's a reason there's only 3 Japan towns left in America, They all were successful and left.

I would recommend just getting there Friday morning and do some shopping before the movie. And Yes there will be cosplayers there. But just ignore them.

Yeah, I've been there plenty of times. Not much to see or do there though. I generally just flip through the overpriced artbooks in Kinokuniya, buy crepes from one of the shops, and sometimes eat at the Cafe on the Bridge.

Japan town does have one of the only incense shops that i know of that sells good stuff though. One of the only reasons i keep going back

I would suggest finding lodging outside of SF and using public transportation (BART + Bus system) to navigate around the area. This could be a bit of a problem if you aren't familiar with the area though.

The important part was more along the lines of 'without telling anyone' because almost always theres plenty of parking, no lines, and the theater is usually 90% empty.

So, at least for me, it's much nicer than going to say the big advertised haruhi movie in a horribly designed city like frisco where not only do you have to deal with the city itself - you have to deal with crowds and sitting next to people.

I much prefer having the theater practically to myself.

Plus they aren't small ones like the Viz cinema and are the same size are real theaters...because they are. From the theaters I went to in frisco they were all pretty small compared to what we've got down here - and i'm sure Viz didn't go crazy and make a huge one either.

Walking in SF isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I'm in terrible shape and I manage just fine. Although it has good public transportation so there is really no reason not to use it

Which theatre? The Metreon? There's an AMC just a few blocks away from Japantown. 1.5 miles can be quite a trek thanks to the hills. I remember hauling my luggage from the train station at Market Street to Japantown thinking it wouldn't be a problem. Man, I did not remember the hike being that far or so uphill when I used to live there.
