Whether people should be divided or stay united depends entirely on the place and situation, but in none of these instances does keeping people united equate to stamping out individualism and personal identity.
Those two elements are what had been fueling human progress since the dawn of time. Without individualism and personal identity art in any of its forms would have never been born, exploration would be minimal and none of the ideological and cultural struggles that made us better human beings would have ever occured.
It's not a coincidence that all the times some nation tried to deprive its population of these rights, it's always been regarded as a dark page in history. It's not a concidence either that these periods of forced obscurantism ended with the dictator being hanged, decapitated, burned alive or otherwise murdered.
Man is a gregarious animal, but diversity is what made us progress.
