What is the best way to speak/listen Japanese without buying a plane ticket to Japan?

op here learn how to speak/listen*

>> No.5045981

Listen - obviously the movies you can leech of the internet for free. I wouldn't recommend watching the anime because you would sound so cartoonish when you speak.

what about rosetta stone... is that at all effective?

No. It's only good to learn the rules.

If you want to SPEAK Japanese you need to have tons of input.

input as in a teacher/tutor?

That's pretty much exactly what you see in language-learning forums and even classes 90% of the time. Check out thejapanesepage.com, that site is full of people like that. That's probably the main reason why so few people in the west speak that language.
The most common variation is that a lot of those losers don't insist on watching stuff with subs, but instead say that watching films (but especially anime) in Japanese is useless, or even harmful for your language skill.

>>5045986
Watching subbed anime is better than not hearing the language at all. Watching stuff un-subbed is also prettymuch useless until you reach the point where you can at least get a vague idea of what's happening.

I've read somewere that you need to know about 200 phrases to understand 70% of anime. Seems about correct.

That's me not too long ago.

I can second that. At least if we're talking about kids stuff and moe shit.
In Spice and Wolf, I used to understand basically everything Horo said, but close to nothing when Lawrence started talking about economics stuff.

op here

ive been doing rosetta stone for a few days now (skipping all of the writing sections) and it does help with sentence structure and most of the basic vocab... but it does take a bit of analysis to comprehend what they are trying to teach you... some of the time it isn't clear at all what they are teaching... but i do feel it is helping
