Has Touhou as a franchise reached a critical mass, meaning that if Zun were to give licencing rights to make an official OVA out of it, the majority of fans would be utterly disappointed after seeing it no matter how good it were (we are talking Disappearance good here).

I for one would still hope for 7 episode long high quality OVAs with insane production investments for every part of the series. OTOH, I'm fan of both grimdark and moeblob versions of everything.

The problem is that Touhou isn't monolithic. Everyone has their own interpretations and by and large none are particularly *right* or *wrong*. Even ZUN's doujin works (CiLR, Three Fairies, etc) are largely treated by fans as just that--doujin works, not official. They're not much more "canon" than anything else.

An official anime would corrupt this environment pretty badly.

I really would have liked a series with Reimu and Marisa plus 7-8 original characters, with nothing but calling each other out, death threats and bullets. Like the games, except not games. Two episodes for each fight.

There are a lot of awesome youkai they could use, like that man-eating bamboo, gong crocodile, the invisible dude who follows you at night and creeps you out because you feel that you're being watched and hear footsteps but don't see anyone (stalker Touhou, fuck yes) and whatnot.

OVA series with few 45-60 minute episodes, each one made by different creators in a different style would be nice. Not following some general storyline, maybe even some parts would contradict others, just an anthology of sorts. That way even though it would be "official" it wouldn't be canon, and fans should be pleased.

Were there a Touhou anime, I feel that it would probably fall into the trap that other doujinshi-based work (i.e. Tsukihime) fell prey to. Granted the Touhou series is no visual novel by any length or writing standards, but you'd still have a bitch of a time pulling any sort of coherent storyline out of the whole thing.

IMO it would work if one of the following was done:

1. Dramatize some of the game storylines.
2. Dramatize something that's already made a successful print work:
a) Inaba&Inaba (this would end up similar to Azumanga Daioh)
b) Three Fairies (this has enough material for a short OVA or 13-episode anime)
3. Make up a new plot involving EXISTING CHARACTERS (not new ones or we'll get another SOUND HOLIC anime). Should naturally extend from an existing setting (e.g. Three Fairies, etc).

Most touhou "fans" are secondaries that prefer fanon over canon and ZUN likes his canon. So it will never happen.

A example of that is the utter shit fan-made "anime" episode. Full of fanon and way too much moe. ZUN likes 'moe' in his work, but it's different than the 'moe' most people think and like. But that's not the main point of what I'm saying.

ZUN prefers his work to keep like this, a anime will pretty much break the 'mood' of things.

I said his music was good. His character designs were flat-out horrible until TH11-12. The CHARACTERS were good, but it's not his fault that he can't draw. That said, the only official character designs that I like are either from 12 or the fighting games.

And individual OVA's done by doujin circles are not a bad thing. Fans already do a lot of stuff with the characters and series, but ZUN himself just doesn't care. By OVA's I mean 10 minute things which may not even have voice acting. There are already plenty of music videos and stuff like that.
