This is the saddest thing ever, because Touhou's the closest you'll get to a comprehensive plot in a shmup.

Because it's the only one with CHARACTERS. Even if they're one-dimensional and the first two-four characters are generally unrelated to the plot.

the Ray Series:

Rayforce - Oh look, we created an A.I. that went rogue, literally hijacked the Earth, wiped 99.8% of the human population (the rest fleeing towards lunar orbit) and amassing robot fleets for mop-up operation. Now we have to send a chick pilot in a rickety spacecraft to destroy Earth.

Raystorm - Oh look, an spinoff. This time we were defeated by the people we sent to colonize planets beyond the Solar system. And after transporting almost all of Earth residents throughout the colonies, the leader of the space colonies dispatches a fleet to destroy Earth, literally. now we have to send out 13 ships (and one of them a knockoff from the previous game) to either intercept that fleet or retaliate at the colony leader's planet itself.

As much as I love Touhou, I consider "plot" to be too strong of a word to describe the story. It's a series of character interactions, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Touhou, ofcourse. From 6-11 the plot has been pure gold. One of the best in any vidya. I mean, Mountain of Faith alone is a fucking supernatural/thriller/detective master piece. Stage 5 delievering suspense like no other, while stage 6 reveals the horrific truth that leaves everybody breathless in awe. The bittersweet tragedy of Extra which draws perfect parallels between christo-judaic and shinto mythologies has no match in written works or drama in all of human history.

All that accompanied by perfect music and gameplay honed to perfection.

Darius Gaiden is okay in my book, but it's with G.Darius that the series reached its peak. Darius Burst isn't half bad either and I recommend it to anyone who owns a PSP, but the game desperately lacks in boss variety. Disregarding the final bosses, you'll pretty much face the same sequence of opponents regardless of the route you take.
