Such words and meanings are always based on memetics and a group's perceptions of them.
If a large enough chunk of the website I'm looking at you /v/ deems the word to mean something else, that becomes the truth.

I don't really care that much either way but if you call everyone with an interest in some aspect of Japanese culture a "weeaboo" it stops being an insult and doesn't make any sense in being used as such. It becomes meaningless.
