I agree with this. Let's look at the new Higurashi sprites in comparison to the original, taking the most obvious example. While the original sprites are undeniably horrendously drawn/coloured, they have character. The new sprites look much better, sure, but they're more... plain. Lacks life, too mainstream. If/when Umineko gets ported, we can bet everyone will look horribly plain, and it'll be done by the same people who redid Higurashi (Alchemist, I believe?). All of Beato's marvelous expressions? Gone. Erika and Evatrice's 'HURRRRR' faces? Gone. Battler's many, many, many crying faces? Reduced to one.

I had a dream recently where Umineko was remade. It was credible, super serious, was like fifty episodes long, and sold incredibly well in moonland. Even more than K-ON! and Bakemonogatari. I can't remember the studio, but I think it was Production I.G. And bizarrely enough, I think Satoshi Kon had some pull in it, too. It was beautifully bizarre.

I still think that Legend would have been awesome if it were adapted as a standalone series, with perhaps eleven or twelve episodes. Too long, you think? Not at all, think of it this way; on average, every manga volume equals about three or four anime episodes. The manga adaptation had four volumes, and was absolutely perfect, even Ryu adored it. Imagine if we got a panel by panel adaptation of the manga?

It took a long time for the Higurashi sprites to grow on me, but I enjoy the Umineko sprites. They may not me badass awesome art, but they have character, and at least their hands are not massivly disproportional to the size of their body like in the Higurashi sprites.

It is still fucking badly drawn, with heads tilting a bit with the bodies having 1-2 poses.
Add ridiculous clothes from time to time, and certain faces that look like they were stretched from the SM64 opening, and you are set.
Yes, you got used to it.

The Umineko VN art grew on me really quickly. What R07 lacks in artistic skill, he makes up for in spades with facial expressions

My only qualm with the anime was the disproportionate amount spend on Ange/Maria's shit. I'm not saying this stuff wasn't important, but holy fuck they skipped so much other crap to make room for it. Why did Ange/Maria's scenes need so much screen time?

The anime was kind of a big disappointment.

I just got into the VN after watching the whole anime, and now I'm finally realizing why so many people hate it.

What I've been doing is every time I get to the point where i know one episode has been covered, I watch the corresponding episode from the anime.

And so far the only scene that has been remotely done well was the Kannon boiler room scene. The anime was butchered to death, and now I'm down at imagining what the anime could have been.

Well, at least the manga is pretty awesome.

I'd have to see examples before I'd render judgement on a voice/sprite patch. A few of the character sprites in Umineko are kinda poor, sure. George looks a kinda crappy sometimes (though I appreciate that they made him a little chunky in comparison to the anime prettyboy), Rudolph's posed kinda awkwardly, Maria looks....enh. But by comparison, pretty much every witch in the series is really well drawn, and Beatrice is tremendously expressive. Jessica is surprisingly cute, Gohda captured his character really well compared to the anime, Battler started kind of wooden but has been grown with time, so on and so forth. If they can keep the general feel of the art though, I wouldn't say no to them increasing the detail some and maybe adding in more alternate poses and such.

As for voices...a good voice patch would be nice but I don't forsee any fan project getting adequate talent. Which leaves the official voices. I'll admit they had their merits. Battler/Ronove being reverse Itsuki/Kyon was great, Inoue Kikuko as Virgilia was an obvious choice, Beatrice had the cackle down perfect, and everyone else at least seemed to match all right. But they totally lost me because it seemed like they had cast Beatrice based only on the first two arcs. She couldn't go into dere mode at all, her voice was too low and 'villainous'.

I bring this up often enough when we're discussing the voice acting, but I honestly think that most of the seiyuu in that doujin drama CD completely surpassed their anime counter-parts. I much preferred Bern and Lambda's seiyuu, for example. Of course, Ono Daisuke is a wonderfully capable seiyuu, but if he was just better directed, he could have been an amazing Battler. I understand that it's completely DEEN's fault as to why he sounded so RAGE all the time. In comparison to that, listen to the seiyuu on End's drama CD, where Battler has his breakdown. Shit, the emotion is there in spades.
