Well, unlike you OP, it wasn't yesterday, so I don't really remember what happened. It was EosD, though.

Why: Touhou wiki, didn't notice the games were shooters and thought it was an online RPG of sorts due to horribly bad art at first, decided to look into it because it was remarkably non-shitty for an online RPG using a Japanese setting and monsters (those are often inhabited by 12 year old kids. ) Then I finally noticed it was a shooter, started playing.
First game/character: IN Border Team, which I greatly regret
How I did: Normal 1cc after a few tries. IN sucks.

My first game was Perfect Cherry Blossom, some three or four years ago. I would occasionally catch the remnants of a late-night /a/ thread, and I didn't particularly care until I realized it was a game and I didn't have to participate in the fan-faggotry. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that you could bomb or focus, being relatively new to shooters at the time. In fact, only a blind pride kept me playing on Normal. The first night was memorable because after dying to Chen three times, my finger slipped to the shift button and the next run hit Youmu. My presence in the fandom was cemented.

First character: Reimu (not like you have much of a choice in TH01)
How I did: only made it past a few levels. Kicking yin-yang orbs around is oddly tricky when you have a time limit.
Why did I try it: After being first exposed to Touhou via a 4koma page with Kyonko (a genderbent Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) cosplaying as Reimu, I eventually looked into it some more, discovered that it was a series of shooting games, and being the OCD person I am I decided to try from the very beginning. Unfortunately I couldn't find any translation patches for the later PC-98 games, despite there being seemingly complete translations on the Touhou wiki, so ESoD ended up being my second game.

Why I tried it: Touhou hijacks on /a/ led to me Marisa Stole the Precious Thing led me to PCB. I didn't think it was that hard when I finished it and didn't really see what the big fuss was about. Only 6 months later did I realize that I hadn't played the full version.

How I did: Didn't stop playing it until 1cc'd, took about a week, then moved on to PCB and the rest. I first did it with 5 lives though, I only went back to it later. Cirno usually took a few lives out of me, but what I mostly remember about my first couple runs was a paper that I made which had how many bombs I would get in the entire game, and where to use it to maximize their effects and clear the game. Fun week that was, when I finally beat Remilia it felt so satisfying.

Why did I try it: I had it on my PC for 3 years already, and back then I tried only the first one (prayers) and never bother much with it. Then In February last year there was a topic on /v/ about Touhou, and people recommended starting with EoSD. So I did.
Haven't stopped playing since.

Forgot to mention, that was on normal. The only games I did on easy were PCB and IN since I was after Phantasm and Last Word spells that required a high number of captured cards.
