Best Ways to Delve into Touhou?

I've been an anime fan for almost 2 decades now, but have only peripherally known about Touhou. All I know is it has cute girls and bullet hell games. What is the best games to play and what are the best ways to get into the lore?

Are you open to the bullet hells? Try Touhou 7, 8 or 4 if you don't mind setting up the emulator.
For the lore, play the games and read the printworks. Some printworks are exclusively devoted to lore, but the others are just as important in understanding things.

Start with 1 and go in order. Don't move to the next one until you beat the game at least on hard difficulty. Otherwise, you won't get the canonical ending and you won't understand the next game.

Almost everyone will tell you to start with whatever game was their first or has their favorite character, With that said I recommend 7, you don't need the games to get into Touhou though, I don't think the average fan has played one. I was listening to the music for years before trying a game. There is also the manga but its probably not going to be interesting if your aren't already invested in the series

Touhou is kinda like doraemon in that you can jump straight into the newest content without getting confused. The game even shows you the name of every character that appears on screen, and there's no gay shit like drastic character development to worry about. So, just pick the game you find fun or one that has your favorite character in it

if it's mainline shmups i'd grab any one of them that isn't 1, 12, or 15. 4, 8 and 11 are really fun; the first 5 games are native to PC98 and require an emulator, but if you get the torrent for them specifically i think it's set up to work automatically. you don't need the games to be into it though, 95% of touhouism comes from fanworks. i read a bunch of fish-out-of-water fics on ao3 that were touhou centric and it got me hooked enough

if you care about canon just jump into the printworks. some of them are independent stories and others are just dedicated lore dumps, but the touhou wiki has a good page on it
