I headcanon that fear is sufficient to keep Youkai alive, but nothing beats actual flesh and if we take the canon about Beast Youkai there's an empowering element to flesh as well.
It's the difference between subsisting on bread and porridge vs a full course steak and lobster dinner. They don't need it, but they'll take it if they have the chance. It allows for exceptions and flexibility, and just like how we can grow attachments to cows and lobsters so can they with Humans. I remember one anon saying that he wanted the Kasen route, but he realised that what he wanted was specifically the Kasen route in the context of KMS rather than just a Kasen route in general. Yeah, this is sort of where I'm at. I was interested, but once details started getting hammered out, I realised that I'd probably be more fulfilled writing the route I want as it's own story instead.
