I got into Touhou after it got popular (on Nicodou) I admit, but it's introduced me to the genre of shooting games which has actually turned out to be pretty fun. I think people who don't have interest in the shooting games should still try them out, not just to get people to stop calling you a "secondary," but also because shooting games are a lot of fun.

I've 1cced all of them on Hard and PCB on Lunatic. I've done all the Extra stages with the exception of SA, but that's more for lack of quality than lack of skill.

Actually, I don't think I've ever read a doujin, though I do occasionally check out a few arrange albums.

I'd recommend starting with Perfect Cherry Blossom and working your way up. If you don't like it, then try Mountain of Faith or Subterranean Animism if it's too hard or too easy, respectively. Don't play on Easy mode unless you've given a sustained and honest effort on Normal - you're only as good as you let yourself be. Try to play all of the games, as they're all unique in one way or another.

From there, just play as you see fit. They're games.

I usually recommend starting with PCB on normal.

Play until you can get to the Prismriver Sisters without continuing.

Then switch to Imperishable Night.

PCB is great for learning the basics, but there's a gigantic difficulty spike from stage 4 on. Imperishable Night is much easier, but you can get some bad habits from it. Once you've established good habits with PCB, you should be able to beat IN relatively easy.

After that, it's up to you.

IN Extra was the first one I did, actually. I didn't have an idea of what Extra was supposed to be like, so I just kept bashing my fucking face into it until I managed to unlock Imperishable Shooting. Though, that goal may have been a part of the problem.

To be honest, the only Extra I really enjoy as much as the main game is UFO's.

I also enjoy Youmu guro, fat touhous, and long walks on the beach.

My idea of a good progression for total beginners using PCB is as follows:

Beat the Game on Easy(With Continues)
Beat the Game on Easy(Without Continues)
Beat the Game on Hard(With Continues)
Beat the Game on Normal(Without Continues)

After this you should be ready for just about anything, skies the limit.

I do, when I'm not feeling particularly lazy (therefore, very rarely). However, since I tend to suck and not have much self-confidence, I always play on Normal. Fuck Easy. Hard is pretty cool, but I always feel I'm not prepared for it yet.

Problem with Touhou for me is that I have to be in the mood to play it. As in I have to be in a good mind state and the house quiet so I can concentrate with the game. That is not always the case so I don't get to do a lot of hard/lunatic runs. Besides that I feel my skill going down the more I die. For example let's say I start a hard run, and die on the second stage. "Fuck that, restarting". Next run chances are I would die on the first stage. From there on it would be just grinding the first stages until I manage a good run and my mind finally focus. My first SA clear was like that.

Besides all that though I managed to clear all the games (Windows) on normal, EoSD, PCB, IN on hard and done all the extras. I've been trying UFO hard since the game came out, and the reason why I kinda stopped playing was because of a certain run 3 months ago, I shit you not I lost my last fucking live in the last fucking second of the game. Byakuren was dying (that explosion animation) and I got hit, gaining the game over. Ever since I just haven't had the motivation, although I've been playing a bit of Double Spoiler.

I don't play too much Touhou but I play similar games. I don't really like the scoring system in most Touhou games, so I don't get too much enjoyment from long periods of play. I notice a lot of Touhou players who don't give a shit about score--I think that's throwing out half the game, but to each his own I guess. If you like the games I'd suggest picking up Mushi Futari on the 360. It's not the player-hating rape-fest that some people claim it to be, unless you're playing Ultra which is only one of the million different modes. If you're one of those people who doesn't even look at their score counter in Touhou, try it, it will teach you to love your score counter.

I've learned to like the system of the Touhou games, SA and PCB are pretty fun to do score runs. The only game that I really dislike in terms of score is UFO since you either play it for survival or you play for score. That is bullshit, I don't have the skill to go throughout the entire game with only the starting lives plus the few others you get normally without the red UFOs.

As far as danmaku games go, Touhou is the only one I play. I'd like to try others, but most of them are for consoles, and I can barely control the character/ship with a controller, I need a keyboard.

I understand your point, but what happens for me is that I don't even try to score when playing hard and up in UFO. When I was clearing EoSD, PCB and IN on hard I was actually grazing the bullets, without focus with the border was active and collecting time in IN. It was challenging and it didn't get in the way of how many lives you'd get, you could screw up and lose one but that would be your own fault. It's different from UFO since the game only gives you 3 starting ones and perhaps another 2 or 3 during the game, forcing people with less skill to not bother with the scoring system at all and focus on the red UFOs.

...kinda lost interest when SA and Uwabami Breakers were both build on MoF's engine, UFO was pretty interesting and had a good scoring system although by that time I had already moved from touhou to other shmups. Patiently waiting for Ketsui.

In other news, I don't get how people can use arcade sticks for Touhou on Lunatic, yet for stuff that's actually harder (dodonpachi daioujou-like). Maybe it's based on the developer's own design? I'm pretty sure ZUN is a keyboard user, even though everything I did was with a pad.
