You might have asked yourself why are monsters depicted as cute girls. Or rather, why is there an utter lack of typical monsters in Gensokyo.

The reason is simple: Natural Selection.

Youkai adapted. Instead of being horrid creatures such as this...

They have evolved into this.

While sacrificing their previous terrifying appearance, they have made themselves compatible with their human predators.

Meaning that while the common breed of Kappa wanes and is killed mercilessly, the new breed of Kappa can hardly even pass 5 minutes before a human male decides it wants to mate with it.
