I assume you're familiar with various plants, so I imagine you could draw them accurately. I'm not an artist, but I think plants are one of the easier things to draw. As for the characters, there's plenty of "how2drawanime" videos online. You shouldn't follow them jot and tittle, however, as developing your own style is best. It's another example of "its not what you know but who you know." I went to university for Horticulture and worked at a bunch of botanical gardens back home. One of the places I worked had a Japanese gardener there, and they were kind enough to introduce me to a master gardener who hired me. Now I work at various Buddhist temples in Kyoto. My dream job basically! Except for the working hours... 72 hours per week... ;_;
Tools depend on what task you do, how often, and budget. The tools I use daily are quite different compared to a home gardener's. But of course I use my pruners 10,000 times a day, everyday, so I have an expensive pair. But for someone who prunes occasionally, the $12.98 fiskars pruners from Lowes is more than enough. Just don't buy the anvil-style pruners.
I use this type of pruner made by Tobisho. Great for making really precise cuts in busy places. I paid about ¥7000~ for it. Though I have coworkers with real hand forged shit which cost around ¥30,000. It seems the more rudimentary a pruner looks, the higher quality/price it is. You gotta always make sure you carry around oil for them too. They're not made with stainless steel, so they rust if you look at them wrong.
