You can really take any pokemon to the endgame. Pokemon is not that hard. I just play with my favorites, there's really no need for balance or strategy unless you want to get into serious competitive play, which sucks anyway.

I downloaded the newest english version that is posted in the pooshlmer thread the other day on a lark and noticed it has improved a lot in the last year or so. The part before the first gym is always shit in every pokemon game pretty much universally though.

No, you don't understand what this whole Nuzlocke is about.
Keeping any starter pokemons shouldn't even be considered an option. You WILL lose your poke/touhoumons. Either because you did something stupid, or because crit-roller hates you, or because Voltorb used explosion, or because whatever. Sooner or later, your pokemon will die. And of course, Save-scumming is forbidden. You can save when you're done playing for the time being, but if you load because something went wrong, you simply aren't playing Nuzlocke. Just Pokemon.
I'd also advise to nickname your pokes. Look at their natures. Personalize them. It will hurt more when they die, and you're playing for the thrill.

The fun that comes with Touhou + Pokemon is thinking up the type, stats, attacks it will learn throughout the game and creating your own Gensokyo.
Playing someone's pokemon firered hack isn't more fun than Pokemon Firered.
