Sheol doesn't sound nice either nor very escapable in old testament ... not sure if in Judaism they elaborate a bit more on that though.
It is more of a decay/rotting place iirc and I guess what Dante picked for his inspiration of the first circle of hell of people that praised God wrongly, filled with people born before Jesus. Not sure if Christians in the past shared that same thought or if Sheol was just taken as literal dead people that then revive.

I think mostly true, usually stuff like Elysium and similar were reserved for heroes and such, but old mythology seem to be more focus around protection in this life and most stuff got probs lost in time anyway.

I think Sheol is just a place where all souls are away from the light of God as they await the final resurrection. Purgatory, basically. Gehenna is the great furnace-- the place where people actually burn forever.

I think Heaven is a fairly recent concept, though, yeah. Before Jesus came along and did his thing, everyone either went to Hell or just ended up in limbo.

Yeah the original interpretation doesn’t really have Heaven or Hell, it’s mostly either seen as you die-die, or you just wonder the planet/limbo forever as a spirit forever. I’m pretty sure Gehenna is also just a place for people who are permakilled, as the furnace burns your soul to nothingness (which is a popular interpretation for what happens to all mortal souls that get sent to hell in Christianity anyway, annihilationism I think it’s called)
