If you go into it thinking it's a horror film, no. It's not great.

Kubi exceeded my already high expectations. Now I know why Kurosawa Akira said that if Kitano Takeshi made a film out of Kubi, it'd be a masterpiece, and Kitano delivered. You could even call this Beat Takeshi's Ran. The film started with crabs crawling out of a severed neck, which made me think this gonna be a super serious jidaigeki film with big battles, excessive violence, intrigue and betrayal as well as power struggles driven by greed given the subject matter, and it was, but Kitano decided to include his old gags and owarai style, and frankly, this gave the film a unique sense and that is something only Kitano can do without ruining the balance. Him putting himself out of the battle, watching from far away and being a goof is surprisingly my favorite thing in this samurai film. Actually, I kept rewinding some of Hideyoshi-Kanbei-Hidenaga scenes and dialogues because they were golden. I remember Kitano saying two years ago that Kubi would show what NHK's over-romanticized taiga dramas wouldn't show; how nasty the Sengoku warlords were. Even Ourage's pieces of shits paled in comparison. Fucking faggot samurais, I tell you. Gonna rewatch it with my friend next week.

I'm glad it wasn't a Kurosawa tribute, even though that would have been great, too. It was a very Kitano jidaigeki film, something only Kitano can do, and I said this on my other post, but this was as if Beat Takeshi decided to make Ran. I think people who don't know or appreciate owarai and people going into it with different expectations might dislike it, but the film was near perfect.

It was a safe thriller. The end result was kinda fun, but the plot twists are predictable. Nothing innovative, sometimes I just felt like it should move faster and get over with it because I already knew what's gonna happen, but sometimes it had its exciting moments (the murders). I wouldn't recommend it over many other great thrillers, but if you have absolutely nothing else to watch, it's a good product to fill the void.

It was a typical late-Miike film. I watched it knowing it will be a safe thriller and very mainstream, given the cast (a janiizu lead and a CM queen), and sure it was. A dark & sluggish procedural, some splashes of blood, but extremely tame. It felt a little like a more subdued MPD Psycho, a drama Miike directed over 20 years ago. It thrives on dialogue. Humans are the psychopathic monsters, which is a decent theme. The film benefits considerably from Miike's manic flourishes. Overall, it was fun and entertaining, but not the Miike the hardcore fans are asking for.

It was decent, but toothless for a Miike flick. I was disappointed by the lack of murdering scenes. When you read the synopsis, you’d think there’s gonna be lots of blood, but all the victims were shown already dead and kinda obscured. The twist was good, and the ending wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Both of these could have been better though.
