The imokano writer is one of my favorite writers in eroge, just from a writing level, ignoring plot or anything. His style is definitely not for everyone, but I really haven't found anyone else that scratches the same itch for me. I also really appreciate his games since they're very unique as far as eroge goes, dark without going full guro. The closest I can compare it with are Doten Meikai games but even that is not similar at all.

But yeah it's definitely a love it or hate it thing so drop it if you don't feel it.

Kei thinks interesting things, perceives the world in an interesting way. Haruka is a brainless spoiled child, and consequently not much of interest goes on in her head. I want to strangle the brat. Heck, I'd settle for someone else strangling her. And of course almost everything that goes on outside her head is a rerun. So here I am waiting for the other shoe to drop, and it doesn't.

Does anyone have kamige recommendations? The only kamige I've read is Subahibi, but the game's exploration of God made me want more kamige. The limits of language and the brain being wider than sky and the objective truth being a bs concept were also nice bonuses. If possible I'd appreciate games with similar philosophical depth.

finished 闇鍋企画, and with that the saga comes to an end.
it's virtually impossible to either recommend or talk about this game objectively due to it being an 80+ hour fandisk-sequel that pretty much requires you to have played at least 4 out of the dev's previous 5 games. it's lunacy to recommend playing all that to get to this one, and if you didn't like the previous ones this one won't change your mind.
but if you did like them, hoo boy this is some good stuff.

it was glorious, intensely self-indulgent, and i wanted it to go on forever. the premise is that about half the casts of all the guy's previous games get isekai'd to vaguely norse mythology heaven just in time to cause/solve ragnarok, and since it's heaven all their respective recently dead villains and companions are there too. like the creator wanted one last fond look at his toys before putting them away forever, but couldn't decide which ones to play with so he just dumped the whole box on the floor and said "screw it, i'm playing with everyone."

i'm glad i played it with the others fresh in my mind because it was packed with tons of little jokes and callbacks to things and people from previous games with no elaborating at all. the best you get in places is character really poorly trying to recap the events of their games and bungling it horribly. the casts playing off each other was an absolute joy, like a bunch of the mahou shoujos swooning over the influx of ikemen heroes from the other games (utterly smitten kotone was an endless source of laughs) or the ordinary mercs from OtoZ surrounded by the fucking weirdos from Erumani, or everyone trying and failing to explain how their MC was the strongest and the coolest and they only look lame right now because they're totally not used to this world yet. all kinds of stuff i could go on about for hours that really only means anything if you already know who these characters are.

which is pretty much the best part and biggest flaw of the game, it's predicated on whether you like these guys already. it's a fandisk through and through, even if it has its own plot so big it had to be split into two separate games and provides enough closure to several of the previous stories that i'd call it a necessary sequel. since it features dead characters, the mahou shoujos got the lion's share of closure. the stuff with chiyo and haruka was wonderful even if it tore me up inside, as well as yui and telomere (who retains her crown of the sweetest thing in the known universe), and even if it was played mostly for laughs the baggage surrounding chako was handled well. the love this dev has for his characters practically shines out of the screen.

usual gripe list: some slow parts very early on where the pairups aren't very dynamic. you pick up some bleh characters early and some of the better ones late. the spirits, with the obvious exception of shii and maybe fuu, were kinda bland. synapse got off too lightly and i chalk this up 100% to his new appearance. the final two-parter battle was a cool idea but i did too well in the first half and the second was a bit anticlimactic. i know they already had their moments but i wanted to see all the MCs at their true peaks (minus chako the eternally outclassed). i wish all of the casts could have come, even (especially) if that would have doubled the length of the game and bloated the cast size to suikoden proportions. assuming things got cribbed wholesale from the original mahou shoujo, god damn was the shinsetsu version ever an improvement gameplay-wise and especially those skill cutscenes, the OG 超光 honestly pales in comparison.

things that were extra good: tons of battle cut-in action scenes. the engine is cold dogshit but compared to the early games the "production value" is like night and day. character art for everyone after every chapter. new music. holy fuck, thank god, new music. top-notch banter. so many hype moments (sirius got too many, the greedy bastard). the payoff on some of those brick jokes was incredible.

really i just keep coming back to the same analogy. the game has that pure unbridled joy-energy of a kid playing with his entire toy box, inconsistencies be damned. i regret no part of this saga and if anything i have the urge to replay mahou shoujo. the characters will stick with me for a long time and i miss them already.

I usually hate most "normal" books made in this century so I don't think it is explicitly that. I have read Hira Hira, Musicus and am reading Kira Kira. I would not say they are explicitly similar too, so that is what amazes me.
It's strange. If you read both Musicus and Hira Hira, you could tell that it's the same writer, but it's difficult to pinpoint exactly why. The stories are pretty dissimilar on the surface.
Although the white hair similarity and the hihiru condition affecting certain type of people we see in the novel makes one wonder... Mika or Korekiyo would be definitely be hihiru if they were in that novel.
LNs to me are the exact opposite of competent so I tend to disagree with you. It's like he has the best of literature, but mixed with the soul of VNs.

gameplay is serviceable, occasionally varied map objectives, some games have optional bits like beat x enemy with y character for extra scenes, but it's a nice level of difficulty for me. i rarely ever game over but it often comes down to the wire since all of these i've played use MP for skills instead of FE's weapons with durability and there's a pretty big focus on tough miniboss type enemies that you'll need your big hitters to punch through

shinsetsu mahou shoujo i'd say was genuinely good in the gameplay department and really dovetailed the plot parts into the gameplay parts, but the earlier ones are pretty bare. i like the occasional setpiece fight but they're more flavor than challenge.

I have to say old Yuzusoft had so much SOVL. Looks beautiful, almost like (good) anime stills. The voice cast is godlike. The girls even the routelets are cute. The use of visuals even for Yuzusoft is surprising like drawing a name with chalk, the exploding fire exting., the box jumping then falling and standing back up, or the use of text effects. The newer Yuzuge I played are a lot more expressive with sprite movements, but I might prefer the tuned down sprites in this.

This whole VN I've been wondering how they'd handle Mori Mama's h-scene considering she's the only explicit non-virgin heroine in the entire game (since she's a mom). The answer seems to be that they simply won't address it - they never once mention Koyasha's dad, and in h-scenes she's the only heroine who doesn't bleed or talk about the pain of losing her virginity but at no point do they ever address or acknowledge the fact that she's not a virgin. It makes Kuranosuke's magical missing husband seem positively tame by comparison, at least there they acknowledged at some point she must've had sex with another man and MC has to grapple with that even if they don't go into any details beyond general concept. It kinda feels like the people who would be upset by having a non-virgin heroine will be furious that one even exists, so this kind of half-measure where they never address it outright probably won't appease anyone.
I dunno, I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you're going to have a mom heroine, you should probably either acknowledge the fact it means she's not a virgin or just write something else.

like i said, many games especially from elf had side heroines who weren't virgins, i think elf was one of the first to have a main heroine like that though ,but that was just part of the problem. i might remember some of this wrong but from what i recall her boyfriend was a medical student or or from a well off family or going to a top college, she genuinely liked him, he didn't treat her poorly and was a decent guy, and oh yeah she also wasn't a virgin because she gave it to him. then MC comes along and finds all this out and has to get her to cheat on her bf then dump him, so the girl being a piece of trash was the problem. elf had plenty of male MCs who slept around but once a girl does that it's a different story. also it didn't spell the end of elf or anything since they died 10 years later my guess being the guy in charge wanted to retire or they had too many people leave. if an eroge company is struggling they don't last anywhere near that long. if i got anything wrong hopefully someone can correct me

they always had a "special" relationship, but since the mc never considered her and slept with other girls, she just decided to start a relationship with the other guy. when the mc starts interacting more with her, he realizes that he actually likes her, and tamaki starts to get confused. However, if you try any advances with her like touching or kissing her, she will immediately reject you. her boyfriend realizes that the one she really wants is the mc and decides to break up with her so that she can be with the one she really wants

Goddammit, I was looking for the post I wrote some time ago but I can't find it, whatever, I'll write something summarized. Kakyuusei 2 is the peak of freedom when it comes to the nanpa experience. you have to consider a lot of details you discover through conversations with the girls to plan the ideal date. you can schedule up to 3 dates if I remember correctly in the same day... but you have to consider the travel time to and from and also that some of the other girls might catch you cheating on them. the romance feels realistic and the "randomness" of the events makes the experience much more enjoyable as you don't know who or what you'll meet in each new scene. the only one I remember absolutely nothing about is the green-haired girl with glasses, but the rest are peak heroines. tamaki indeed best girl along with nanase

Because what matters more is how things happen than what happens. There can't really be any true secret in a story because everything you see is just a better/idealistic version of reality. X character dies? Most people are going to too. Does it make your journey meaningless? And so on...
In the end what you remember is not "I got spoiled" but the raw emotion you were left behind with after experiencing everything.

I'm surprised you are so positive on Kakyuusei 2. I didnt get far into it personally since I played it right after Kakyuusei, and Kakyuusei 2 didnt feel like it innovated the gameplay that much from Kakyuusei (though I did like the minigames). As someone who found Kakyuusei very tedious I couldnt get through Kakyuusei 2. Maybe I will give it another shot though.

As far as nanpa experience goes I thought the Doukyuusei series was better at offering freedom than Kakyuusei was. Kakyuusei felt very limited and more like a 'dating sim' imo.

Now I think so too, I can't remember a spoiler ever making an experience worse for me. In this case I was even sure that the X event would happen even without reading the spoiler. Now I'm more interested to get to that part to experience it and see how knowing it affected me because it's rare that I can predict things just from reading the early chapters.
