VNDB uses your default search settings to display random screenshots and random VNs. Just set your default filter to something like "Original Language = Japanese" and you won't see random ugly screenshots from OELVN.

That filter isn't applied to quotes though. Bug the admin to fix it or something.

For VNs especially, there often are different releases and things like that. If I went completely blind I could end up playing some gimped all-age re-release on accident or whatever.

I think your method is quite sensible; a standard-length VN is a large time investment and it makes sense to prepare before jumping in.
I completely understand your point of view as I'm quite neurotic myself and for a long time moege was something I used to escape the constant feeling that my life was a giant house of cards that could fall over at any moment and I couldn't do anything about it.
The nice thing though about this paranoid, negative mindset is that you only have happy surprises. I expect every single VN I read to be terrible, and if it's clearly good I expect it to soon become terrible. So when I finish one and it's actually good or even decent, it's amazing!
If I did research and expected certain titles to be good and they weren't, I would be disappointed. But because I never do, I'm never disappointed! Either my delusions are validated or I read a miraculously great title. I "win" either way.
Over time this method of allowing myself to be surprised has I think mellowed my neurotic tendencies to a certain degree. If so, that's a great boon, as letting go of that part of yourself even a little makes it easier to let go of more and more of it. It will always be a part of me, but I'm now capable of enjoying VNs as they come instead of living in constant fear that my favorite heroine's route will become unnecessarily lachrymatory.
(Lachrymatory is my word of the day.)

Starting reading Yumemi Dreamer by Kogado, up to chapter 8 now, just some thoughts about it.

First off, don't read if you're looking for something like Symphonic Rain. It has virtually nothing in common with it despite being made by the same team.

Weirdly enough, the music mini game feels like a downgrade too. Unlike in Symphonic, you don't even play the melody of the song, all the notes you hit just make... tambourine sounds or something. The RPG style battles are a joke, shouldn't have bothered including it.

The writing frankly feels pretty mediocre. Feels like they just went by the template for the magical girl genre, mushed with some idol themes where the protag is kinda like their producer... while it's also a soft harem? And well, the drama mostly feels pretty rushed and forced, leans too much into shock value, with clumsy pacing.

But if you're a sucker for magical girl hopes n' dreams fighting against chuuni baddies with some edgy despair and all that, you'd probably like it.

And well, most the characters are likeable enough, and the cute-girls-doing-cute-things scenes are nice. Honestly the best parts are with Ayumi and Tsukina (her friend who not-so-secretly wants to gay sex her). MC is forgettable, though. A bit tame for my tastes but it's an easy read and cute so I might as well finish the whole thing and see where it goes.

Finished Diabolique recently. It feels like something you would see in a shoujo manga. I expected a bit more from the plot about the diaboliques but it's pretty underdeveloped and rushed toward the end. Still I enjojyed it for the MC and his romance with the heroine. The first three chapters are the best for me. Would recommend if you like a guy who is faithful to his wife across multiple lifetimes.
