>Why do you use the filter to hide threads you don't like instead of manually hiding them?
Because it saves us some time. If you counted up all the minutes you waste (everyday) sifting through threads it would come up to the hundreds. Also, the filter is good for hiding VN spoilers.

>Why do you use the filter to hide the post of trolls and shitposters.
Isn't it obvious? 1 and -1 doesn't work on trolls that want to be famous or infamous. The best way to defeat them is with 0. (No attention.) The filter is good in the sense that it trains users to start ignoring trolls. This will help us out in the long run. It also has an added benefit of holding tripfriends accountable for their behavior. Back in the days before this filter became mainstream we were at the mercy of shitposters. Now we have them by the balls.

Only problem is that there exist a new breed of troll. A comment field troll. Trolls like Bawson, Sion, and KoG exist by word of mouth. <--Just the simple act of name dropping them adds days to their troll legacy. The only way they'll go away for good is if we stop mentioning them. Hence the reason why you should filter their names from the comment field.

Ever heard of the saying, time is money? There's only two users in the history of 4chan that made me frustrated to the point of anger. Neither of them post much nowadays.

My filter is twice as big as the op's and without it I would have to waste my time manually filtering the threads I don't like. Unlike /a/, /v/ and /m/, /jp/ is similar to /b/ in the sense that we don't have a primary topic that unites us. According to moot he created /jp/ to act as a trashcan board for all of the non-anime stuff we used to post on /a/. Consequently, /jp/ has become a gathering of niche-factions that in some cases don't necessarily get along with each other. I use the filter simply to hide the topics that aren't relevant to my interest. (Not because of anger as you alluded to.)

Also, god bless the Idolfriends for knowing how to condense their threads. Since they use a thread template it's easy to filter them. We could learn a lot from those guys.

What part of using the filter is HELPING our community do you guys fail to understand? A troll by definition is someone that comes to an internet community and misbehaves in order to bait a reaction out of users. The word reaction is synonymous with the word attention. The filter is just an easier way of not giving the shitposter(s) attention. I know this is only going to strengthen their troll legacy but I'll give you some examples.

Contrary to popular belief, the dailydose threads known as "Japanese Bird cooking spaghetti" started out as a test for AoRF's perl script. He didn't intend on it to become infamous (he even gave out a greasemonkey script that hid them). But you dumbasses had to respond to every single JBCS thread (with no exceptions). It got to the point where AoRF would be foolish not to cash in on the popularity of it. And don't even get me started on KoG and Bawson. You guys fed them on a day to day basis.

One last thing, don't be fooled by tripfriends that say Anons are the true trolls. Any one that has ever trolled 4chan on a *day to day basis* did it in the name of something be it Sion, KoG, Arc, or Bawson. They may not use the name field but they certainly live off of the comment field (a.k.a the gossip/scapegoat field). If you've ever complained about KoG's childish behavior or Bawson's homosexuality then you are the reason why they're still here. You are trollbait.

I don't know what you were doing on /b/ in the first place but one man cannot make a difference. I believe there exist such a thing known as board culture. /b/ is a board that a) lacks veterans and b) attracts a lot of newcomers. Without veterans shaping the culture, the culture is shaped by newcomers. Here's a question, why do /b/tards continue using rapidshare despite the fact that there are better file hosting websites available such as mediafire? It's because /b/ lacks culture janitors (the people that act as guides for newcomers). Because of culture janitors /jp/ is a melting pot of proper behavior.
