you still have to engage thoughtfully with stuff. by "passively listening" i understand just having something on the background half-heartedly picking up words here and there, and if you do that you will not learn dick even after 3000 hours of it.

You don't 'learn' a language you get used to it, your brain figures it out for you ( unlike other skills ). So when your a beginner any Japanese will help you get used to Japanese.

I do wonder what you mean by passive because that makes a big difference. If it's audio only then it will help less but It's still good, if you are watching it on a second monitor without english subs that is a huge leg up, and if you are watching on one monitor and no eng subs then I would consider that 'active'. In the beginning and your just watching stuff you don't understand it might feel 'passive' but your actually making gainz. It does help to pay attention more but don't overthink it, more input more gainz.

I watched a bunch of raw anime and acquired a good amount of japanese through just that. No lookups, grammar guides, nothing. I did watch stuff I already learned but the majority of my input was stuff I hadn't watched before even in the very beginning.

When you see stuff happening with the language you will then learn that language. You see them playing a game where the running away from a big monster or something then you pick up the word 'RUN!', they do a funny emote and learn the word for 'funny' and 'dance'.

No input is input. More input more language gainz. Just focus on getting more Japanese into your mind and body, then you will look back and realized you learned way more than you thought.

the second part of that is what tends to be difficult and as the disdain for foreigners grows i can only assume it will get more difficult but fear not japanese is a dying language anyway and japan is being quietly conquered and subdued by foreigner filth and i cant say i feel bad about it

You sure you spent a decent amount of time drilling them? People sometimes think that just adding a word means you'll know it the next time you see it, but it normally takes a week or so to reinforce it.

Also, one constant I spotted when the Japanese subtitles are available is that words are pronounced seemingly a little differently then what the kana implies. The latter half of 教室 I hear す instead of しつ. I would've thought that to be a brand new word had it not been for the subtitles. Is it some kind of casual dialect or inflection?

Your ear just isn't use to つ. Depending on the speaker and the other frequencies in the audio, the T sound of the つ can seem less pronounced.
