Hou Yi is responsible for his own actions, regardless of the involvement of Chang'e and her evil gift.
He could've lived happily with his wonderful wife and son, but because he allowed his wife to corrupt him, he went on to murder his son and subsequently got killed by his wife in revenge, whereupon she embarked on an eternal quest of vengeance against her late husband's wife for her role in things.

Don't make this out as something where only one person is at fault. They were clearly in it together.
