Nobody really likes touhou; it's just that alot of people pretend they do, to fit in with all the other people that pretend they do. This model is very popular with losers that want to feel part of a group for change.

There's also alot of bad music, because all the people pretending they like Touhou will listen to any shit as long as they can relate to other pretend Touhou fans. So, if you're a scrub Japanese artist, what do you do? Release original doujin music (that might have the merit of originality, which is admirable if nothing else), or remix another Touhou song and instantly get popularity from the zerg of XD 2HU retards? Same for fanart, doujins, etcetera. No matter how shit you are, as long as what you do is Touhou-related, you'll enjoy instant praise. Even the most unfunny, retarded Touhou doujins are guaranteed to be read.

So Touhou is:
a) A doujin shmup that is sorta fun to play.
b) A social movement where incapable, artistically lacking people band together with a mass of social rejects into one gigantic cesspool of what ruins modern society: the desperate need to fit in and be praised.

But I have to agree this is what's happening nowadays. And not just in Touhou

Touhou's a series of games that you may or may not fun.

It has a lot of music that you may or may not really like.

It has a lighthearted and fairly whimsical setting, which is very fleshed out for a shmup series.

Many one-off bosses and minibosses are given personality by the creator, and fans may find that they like certain characters, even if they only appear once or twice.

There's a large fan community that makes all sorts of stuff, some of which people think is pretty neato.

Touhou is also refreshing because it is surprisingly uncreepy for a such a japanese series; you'd think that a series with over 100 characters, but only three male characters, it wouldn't be, but it somehow is.

Touhou's creator does the art as well, but can't draw for shit. You may/may not find this quaint.
