Yamato Takeru was mortally wounded when attempting to scale Mount Ibuki, when the local deity invoked a hailstorm that nearly killed him.

However, the "deity" Yamato Takeru is claimed to have encountered (but not interacted with in any meaningful manner) was in the shape of a white boar - no oni are mentioned as a distinct species in the story.
The suspicion stems only from the location and murder weapon.
