Just found this sentence
>彼は強盗に家の中を荒された
Shouldn't there have been が instead of を?

>> No.46244448
File: 1 KB, 38x49, 1707055947129337.png [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
46244448

>>46244445
In the sentence you found, 「彼は強盗に家の中を荒された」, the use of 「を」 instead of 「が」 is actually correct and aligns with a particular grammar construction in Japanese. This construction is used to express an adverse event or experience that someone undergoes, often translated as "someone had something done to them (by someone/something)" in English. In this construction, the particle 「に」 marks the doer of the action (in this case, the robber), and 「を」 is used to mark the direct object of the action (in this case, the inside of the house).

The sentence translates to "He had the inside of his house ransacked by a robber."

This structure is a form of the passive voice, where the focus is on the experience of the subject (彼) rather than on who is performing the action. Using 「が」 instead of 「を」 would change the focus or meaning slightly, and it wouldn't fit this particular passive construction that emphasizes the adversity experienced by the subject.

The four stages of sharing a space with Jamal:

>1
At first you hate him for being an obnoxious tripfag.
>2
Then you feel sorry for how much he's bullied.
>3
Then you hate him again because he deserves it.
>4
You finally grow a begrudging endearment for him because his presence is inevitable, like a force of nature.
At this stage, you still throw bants at him, but the words are not very genuine in nature.

they were always right. western scientists' results oscillate because they lie to get published.

>New study links nose temperature and immune response
'''
The study, from researchers at Massachusetts Eye and Ear hospital and Northeastern University, appeared last December in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. According to their findings, a crucial frontline immune response, which occurs within the nasal passages, becomes significantly less effective when the nose itself gets cold.

depends on the kind of mistake but just (kanji and word) dictionaries + sometimes googling
sometimes theres a really simple etymology like idk mabuta = me + futa that you might have not noticed
if youre mixing two words up look up the kanji and see if theres some clear logic to the composition
if theyre similar in meaning try to get a better understanding of difference (but if theyre really similar its probably not worth trying too hard to distinguish them)
accidentally running into memorable example sentences in media can help with bigger mistakes in reading and meaning but maybe not with words that are very similar
sometimes theres not much you can do but hope itll be easier if you try again in a year

to take the above facts and claim that cold can cause a cold is like saying cars can cause a cold because car exhaust can also reduce the immunity ever so slightly. In addition, heavy exposure to carbon monoxide can bring an individual to a verge of death when, in recovery, even natural commensals can cause a serious respiratory infection

Nuke's problem was that he fundamentally didn't understand Japanese. He's kind of deceptive because he looks like he's really getting it. He even nods his head every once in a while. Take this clip of him from awhile back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixE72FzagVg&t=2542s
He reads 錬成陣を使わない天才的錬金術の技 ("a masterful alchemical technique that doesn't use a transmutation circle..."), and the first thing he does is look at the common collocations for 錬成, which he then takes to mean that 錬成 means academy. He then repeats back the phrase 錬成陣を使わない, which in his mind now would be "a technique that doesn't use the academy." That doesn't make any sense. Does Nuke realize that doesn't make any sense? Probably not. He probably doesn't really think about anything.

this is cope.

brain needs to create new pathways for you to learn something new. if you texthook for 10 years, you'll become an expert hooverer but you won't be able to read shit otherwise, just as before. and even if you switch after a couple of years, you still will have to learn to read without hoovering pretty much from scrach so it's just a waste of time in the long run

for reference, similar thing happens when an esl who watching 10 years of subbed shows tries watching a movie without subs, or when you try playing a musical piece from memory when you only can do it by following the sheet

hovering isn't like training wheels
it's like a parachute
you'll open it when you need it, like when you're falling from a plane
but when you're jumping a 1m height, you won't open it as it's not necessary
so as you're reading more and more japanese and the words you're reading become more familiar and less of a dangerous fall, you'll naturally start using it less and less without conscious effort until you're really just busting it out for obscure words

the pre-requisite for this is to *actually* read and put in the time, which nuke never did

>Healthy eating
Fruits and vegetables are not healthy.
They are less calorie-dense, which is not to be confused.
It just means you will be satiated quicker if you are obese and can't overeat as quickly.
>Drinking lots of water
Frequent hydration is severely overrated.
You should be drinking when you get thirsty, not to fulfill some arbitrary quota.
Most animals outside of hot climates don't even drink water. They hydrate by eating plant matter or drinking blood.
>Regular exercise
Exercise is very straining to the body, it doesn't do much, except maybe if you're obese and need to lose calories.
Overexercise is a very real thing that many people suffer from, especially if you go to the gym.
>Sensible bedtime
Overrated. You want optimal sleep time, which can be different from day to day.

The other ones are fine.

I'm not a huge fan so far. "Dating sim" would be exaggerated, the social link with your waifu of choice will be like 30 minutes in a 80~ hour long a game. It's more like a "social life" simulator where you spend 30-60 minutes bonding generically with like 20 different people. Romance is just a slight spice added for some of them. The problem for me is that it's VERY text light, something which would be a lengthy scene in a visual novel is like 5-10 lines of text here. It alludes to substance without really having much of it. That said, I think that's precisely why people like it so much; it carries itself as if it has deep, meaningful interactions with characters while also being so brisk and easy to read even those who hate reading won't mind going through all the text. "Style over substance" comes to mind in many ways, although that's not to say there is no substance. The JRPG gameplay in P3R is atrocious to me ("hit-the-weakness" bingo where you handle almost every single fight in the game the same way) but others seem to like it more than me so I'll put that in subjectivity city

Anyway, I think it'd be decent but not great reading practice. It's decent because it covers a huge variety of topics (e.g. all the classes in school which teach different subjects) but not great due to the low text density. The main thing you're doing won't be reading. That said, I'm actually godlike at Japanese and am just here to reference a like 8 year old DJT meme about manga not being reading (remember when we used to eat our manga?) so I might be out of touch with how slow beginners would read. Perhaps it's actually great for beginners because the scenes will be fast and so they won't feel as bad spending hours on 5-10 lines.

Anki is supplementary. The actual results you get in Anki don't really matter that much. It's there to assist with an inevitable mental process that occurs in bulk through massive input. You should only be worried if you read for hours a day for years and can't feel any improvement, but that would make you a real freak of nature.

I mean Anki is the main way I'm learning new vocab. I try to watch some youtube videos or listen to podcasts for 15-20 minutes at least, so I'm not sure if that's what you meant by input.

I've tried the whole 'everything in Japanese' method but it honestly burns me out too quickly. I feel like I never get to just turn my brain off and watch TV after work or relax. I felt like all my spare time turned into studying, so I quit that after like a month or so.

Anki is something you do at the beginning stage (and potentially continue after the beginning stage) to give yourself a foundation of some varying degree of strength. What you're using it for is not really "learning new vocab", it's "giving yourself the foundation to learn words through input." Youtube videos and podcasts count as input, though are less likely to be really crunchy in terms of learning since you won't be able to so easily look up words you don't know.

On its own Anki will always provide only very brittle understandings of words. You're learning them outside of context (or within a highly restricted context) and seeing them with artificial frequency. No one will go from anki to speaking, or anki to reading effectively. All Anki exists for is to give a foundation enough to /start/ reading to some degree, and to this end it doesn't really matter if you're forgetting half your cards or whatever, since the objective is not getting anki cards correct, the objective is reading. And reading isn't an "everything in Japanese" thing, it's just a vector of studying wherein the studying is also entertaining. (BTW, to this end I only recommend an anki-centric study regiment for 1-2 years at most, 2 years for those who are really finnicky and maybe want to thoroughly gain exposure to 2,000 kanji before starting to read. Not sure how deep you are in though).

Okay, maybe it's too abstract. Let me lay down some core ideas here

1) You can theoretically start reading at any time; some successful people start reading without ever doing anki
2) The objective of Anki is to put yourself in a state where you feel comfortable reading
3) What anki prepares you to do is have light recall for meaning and pronunciation, which assists with reading, but on its own does not actually teach the word

So basically every day that you do Anki you are taking 1 step towards feeling more comfortable reading. What actually happens in anki, and your results, largely don't matter, because it's either way 1 step forward. Eventually, with a hard cap of like 2 years, you'll start reading and everything you ever did in Anki won't matter whatsoever. Whether you continue with it or not at that point won't matter. Anki is a minor blip at the start of learning that exists only as a concession towards those too hesitant to start reading immediately for one reason or another.

If you still don't understand, come back to this post in like 1 year. If you haven't given up due to poor anki results or whatever.

"Being able to read" is not a binary state. I mean, presumably you're listening to those youtube videos and podcasts without understanding everything, right? It's like that. And if you're caught up in like the base level act of parsing kanji, then know that texthookers / mouseover dictionaries solve that completely, putting aside various kana only media. The first thing I read in Japanese, which I started alongside anki on Day 1, was Pokemon Yellow for the gameboy color.
