in the first chapter I thought it was going to somehow be his take on iterative AI since each time they got rid of the markings, they came back looking slightly different, but then it just never came up
on the whole I think this is a really poor arc. Even for normal standards, nothing happens, and the timing seems completely wrong (why are they gathering supplies for winter at the end of February when spring is only a month away) but aside from nothing happening, no information is revealed, no characters show up, and no one seems to care about the whole thing.
And on a more personal level, Mamizou fucking over Reimu that blatantly left a bad taste in my mouth. I know that she's always sort of been like that but it's usually less blatant

It honestly kind of sucks just how much Reimu gets outwitted and humiliated in the various manga to any humanoid Youkai opponent. This one manga is especially bad for it, Suika, Mamizou, Aya, they all run rings around her. A shrewd and cunning shrine maiden would make it cool when they manage to outwit her.
Like there isn't anything wrong with this chapter in particular, just that it is so fucking consistent that on the last pages I was like please Reimu, figure it out just to break up the monotony.

Maybe. Youkai is a broad term that puts a talking broom in the same category as a mountain sized monster or a spirit that lives in your dreams and Gensokyo's definition is so vague it includes western spirits / monsters like vampires.

You'd really have a problem with most mediaeval art depicting Hell then. Long before Dante throngs of artists were drawing demons as being cackling tormenters punishing sinners. It's really not that difficult to understand why, either. When crime and punishment was so strongly retributive and could involve so many different forms of physical punishment, it was an easy logical leap to see demons as being the same kind of torturers and executioners people knew in life. Dante popularised the concept, but he never invented it, in fact most of what he did was take the concept and then write a cool fanfic where everyone he personally didn't like was being tortured while his favourite poet showed him around.
