The most fun I ever had on /jp/ were with the gachi threads and the nico-nico excavation/invasion threads.
Train watching threads and japan landscapes threads were also really comfortable.
I am a bit nostalgic for the occasional game threads where jpsies would get together in a MMO or a netplay game and play together. Jp doesn't seem to be talking about games anymore.
I stooped being a regular when the general negativity was simply becoming overbearing and not fun.

You can still find games, just have to be lucky to see it on the catalogue when someone pops a thread up. You wouldn't want to miss the GTA:SA for example, because those games are rare and a lot of fucking fun if you got 6 hours to burn. I prefer it this way, keeping up with longform games is a little stressful for me; just keeping up with my friends on WoW back in BC days was a challenge. The 'gamenight' format works well.

Not him, but I get what he means. It was nice when it was people hosting whenever they wanted, whatever they wanted; people joined, had fun, took it easy~, posted screenshots/videos of the event, and it died down until the next person came to host whenever that would be. There was nothing else, just playing gaemu on the jay doing various activities dressed as 2hus.
When people started getting mean about what games were being hosted or that there wasn't many people hosting, or whatever inter-board drama got brought up, it wasn't fun anymore. I felt like the formula works best when it's sporadic and either you're watching a thread or the catalogue for people deciding to "I'm gonna do X on Y, be there or be square!".
Schedules, expectations, and back to back threads tend to burn people out.

I knew about those threads for a few years but only joined in for the first time last Christmas/New Year. It's probably the most fun I've ever had playing a video game. I felt very 'nostalgic' for it the week after, but that's probably not the right word.

Are they really all like that, though? I do think that many altchans can lack activity, but I believe it's more about finding the right ones that match your interests and engagement level. I usually frequent places like 22chan, tohno-chan, and 4-ch where there's usually enough activity to keep me engaged daily all combined, and where posts are just a lot more meaningful than just shitty one-liners. As for /jp/, I only visit monthly to see if there are any worthwhile threads to post in, but 99.99% of the time, there just aren't any.

The problems run much deeper than just holoshits and other idols. Most other threads are just imagedumps (partly because vteen threads bump all the good threads off) and even when there are good thread they'll inevitably be shitted up by retards spamming reddit memes and using crossie buzzwords every second word.

/jp/'s biggest problem is that jannies and meidos are fucking useless and barely do anything to keep the board from being flooded by low quality threads, the 2020 vtuber and the 2021 /qa/ raids being the most egregious examples. That's probably the biggest advantage altchans can have over 4chan – a mod team that actually does more than just the bare minimum (that's also why all those "free speech" altchans die pretty quickly)

There was a small piece of /jp/ culture that I would describe as cutesy and infantile which isn't far off from the posting style teenagers use these days in an "ironic" way to mask their collective self consciousness. Seeing as they have taken over this entire site, it would make sense that they would cling to that aspect of /jp/ and beat it into the ground. For the majority of /jp/'s golden days, the culture has thrived on gatekeeping and being relentlessly conservative. Perhaps a rather coincidental analogy to Japan's tradition of keeping to itself. It was what made the board feel like home, at least, for the likes of me who sought to escape from the mainstream.
I know many of us are too old and jaded at this point to care, and while it's true things have worsened globally around 4chan, that doesn't mean /jp/ is or has suffered less. The fact we are succumbing to change and growing more and more malleable and adapting to interests we deemed the devil back then tells us that the culture is becoming a shell of its former self. The Jay's core is already dying.

I think it's fine if it's kept to the threads.
