The comic book industry has recycled the same characters for well over 50 years now (batman, superman, spiderman, wolverine, x-men, etc). And these characters have had multiple authors work on them. Or rather, it being fanfiction doesn't imply that there will necessarily be a Mary Sue, just that Mary Sues most often appear in fanfiction.

There are certainly canon Mary Sues.

So, if a fanfiction were:
a. written mainly just using the setting.
b. canon characters show up infrequently and are almost never compared to fanmade ones.
c. no mary sues.

I wouldn't mind that fanfiction. Obviously it would need to be written well too.
