I think you may be a little confused about the 'makeup'.
The dolls faces are painted and sealed, referred to as a 'face-up'. They are permanent, and can only be removed with chemicals such as acetone. Heads are on the cheaper side, and you can change out the head of your doll very easily if you want to have multiple heads for the same doll. The doll you linked will come with a pre-done faceup by Volks, other heads will come blank and are intended to be customized.
Also, be aware that despite the pictures in the listing, the doll will come naked, and only have a slip dress and underwear with her in the box. So buying an outfit for her ahead of time, or in the same order, is a good idea.
If you don't want the head, eyes, and wig that come with that doll, and intend to make your own custom, then all you need to buy is the base body for the scale you want. The Standard Models are for people who don't plan on customizing the head right away or at all.
I hope this clears some things up for you, feel free to ask more questions.

Yes, so you would want to buy one of those in which ever size you want. From there you would buy a blank head, if you want to paint your own, eyes, a wig and any clothes you would want for her. There are a lot of artists who sell custom heads too on platforms like Etsy and Yahoo Auctions Japan. Lots of options out there.

Depends on what you mean by hard. Technically it's very simple as you can just use a proxy service to bid for you (I use FromJapan personally). But actually winning one depends on a few things, such as how much you're willing to spend, and who the seller is. Some sellers' heads tend to go for thousands of dollars, but there are also a lot that sell for more reasonable prices (like 200-400). I also suggest using a "sniper bid" instead of a real-time bid, so you don't end up in a bidding war with someone else. I made this mistake once and I'm pretty sure I ended up paying a lot more for the head than I could have.

DD and DDS are very similar, but DDS girls are slightly shorter. They're supposed to be the younger sisters to the Dollfie Dream. The body sculpts themselves are slightly different and all of the measurements are just a little smaller but they are functionally the same.
That said, all of my dolls are DDS, I find, for clothes, they offer a lot of versatility as they fit all DD clothes, but also wear Smartdoll clothes really well too. The slight difference in measurements means a lot at scale.

One thing to be wary of if you're getting an MDD! Some heads look really big or mature on the MDD because it's small and more youthful looking, so I would try to pick cuter and younger looking heads to match it. Good luck finding one you love!

Doll point sells bodies as well, they're on a shelf right behind the racks of hands/heads. They also sell hands and parts that are exclusive to Doll Point, so look out for those. And don't forget to remind them of the tax exemption as almost everything in the store qualifies and hitting the requisite amount isn't hard here. The display units on the right hand side of the store is all consignment pieces, aka Volks selling on behalf of a 3rd party, and doesn't apply to tax exemption.

Probably a combination of mark up and pricing things when the Yen was much stronger. If you're in the US it might be cheaper due to shipping & handling and no customs. But I'm Canadian and I get hosed by those regardless of which store I order from.

Shipping on a MDD body plus a bunch of outfits was 5k via DHL and 5% extra for handling. Surprisingly, the base bodies you buy in store are loose in the box. My MDD came bubble wrapped so she wasnt flopping around all the way from Tokyo.

A doll itself will yellow from age long before the face up art fades. Unless it was left out in the sun 24/7 its not going to disappear with age. More so for artists as they tend to seal their work with UV resistant clear coats.

Volks released a new body type, the Chimikko style for Anya Forger, which is basically an MDD with the height of a Yo-SD so they can share clothes. Yo-SD is more of a 1/3 sized toddler than a 1/6 mature fashion doll size like Azone PureNeemo dolls are, they mostly can't share clothes as Yo-SD is very fat and thick and stubby compared to long and thin fashion doll scale, very different proportions at the same height. I had that same opinion of all resin until I saw anon's Suigintou. Ringdoll's Alice01 is perfect. Most resin dolls I see with caked on blush and eyes like they're either overdosing and about to pass out or have been up for 48 hours high on meth I find off-putting. How does Resin and Vynil feel at that scale? I've had some dolls on the smaller size, I'm curious as to how the big ones feel to handle.
I doubt they're fragile, but resin feels quite odd in my hands, I struggle to think of how it'd fare in that size.

Smaller resin dolls have a nice solid feel to them (but especially thin parts like fingers or horns can be delicate and need special attention not to be damaged.) They're weighty and cool to the touch, but not overly heavy. Depending on how they're strung, they can range from being overly jerky when trying to pose them (string too tight) to having not enough tension to support their own weight (string too loose.) A doll with good tension and engineering will move smoothly from one pose to another, but stay in the pose they've been left in without too much difficulty.

Vinyl is light, sturdy, and the shells are (usually) a little flexible. They sometimes make noise when being posed, but because the shells have more pliability, it's a lot harder to break even thin parts of a vinyl doll because they'll just bend under pressure and return to their original shape after the fact. They're considerably lighter than resin dolls of a similar scale, and tend to be less... fussy about posing. As the frames wear out over time, they, too, may become loose at the joints -- but replacement parts usually aren't too hard to come by (Smart Doll notwithstanding.) Between the two, is softer to the touch, but has more friction to the hand. Resin is hard and smooth in comparison.

My big centaur boy weighs more than a small dog and the fact that he can stand is a god-given miracle. I pinched my finger on one of his joints the other day -- it bruised. I don't know what people do with those humongous Dollmore Trinity girls and boy; the craftsmanship is sublime, but they have to weigh a ton. I believe an anon here might have one? I'd love to hear what life is like in the world of 80cm+ dolls. (That goes for big Obitsu/Parabox vinyl girls, as well!)

the only one i have arrived pre-styled with the lace pre-trimmed, but i imagine it would be dangerous for your doll’s faceup and unnecessarily difficult to try to trim it while worn. probably couldn’t hurt to try it on first to get a feel for how you’d like it to sit, though. i think the extra lace is included in case you want to add any custom ventilating, for like a widows peak or some sideburns or a very specific hairline shape.

Tried to give it an honest shot and get her some clothes and a wig instead of the hair shell and see if that sparked something but it was no good. The "wig" ended up just being some string with strands of hair attached, I shouldn't have tried temu.

Thank you. The backdrop could certainly use an iron but I was lazy. I have tried hot glue to affix things to my dolls (the eye movers, and magnets for tails) and have had mixed results. It fell off after a while and needed to be reapplied in most cases. So I've gone back to using sticky tack mostly. I've had that fail once or twice in the past (the reason why I tried hot glue in the first place), but I think if you use a shit load of it, the chance of failure is reduced.

My EYES. Jokes aside, I am genuinely impressed looking at the site and youtube channel. When I first though of how a system could be made I considered all sorts of complicated mechanisms with exposed switches in the back of the head and so on, but recreating an eye socket and just slotting it in completely eluded me. It's so concise, I love the craftsmanship and engineering behind these dolls, seeing them in action and their installation was a delight.

Thanks anon, I look forward to hearing how the modelling putty worked out for you, I heard good things about it from stop motion makers back when I was into it myself.

If you can find it, vintage My Twinn stuff is your best option for a DD match, they were 22" American Girl competitors for an older demographic. They've been discontinued a long time but the furniture is very solid, and also frequently heavy to ship. Beyond that, pet furniture tends to be the best option... some 18" doll stuff will work even for DDs and other 60cm dolls (and work much better for 40cm MDDs,) but it's very hit or miss. At the end of the day, looking at the measurements directly is your best option when you can.

Are Azones shit? Why are they so unpopular compared to other BJDs?

They're alright dolls. Azone stuff is a bit on the cheaper side, both in terms of cost and quality. Their 50cm dolls exist in this midway between 1:3 and 1:4 scales, where only stuff made for them looks good.

They also dont have as much customization compared to others. The Iris Collect/Petit lines have maybe 3 head molds. Obitsu, where Azone sources most of their bodies from, doesnt offer much more either. And what parts are uniquely Azone you can't get individually, like busts.

They arent unpopular; There's a few regular Azones or varying scale in these threads.

It's popular enough that within Japan there are multiple doll-specific storefronts and outside of japan Volks has at least one in the 'states... I can't remember if Danny ever opened one. Doll cafes are a thing multiple places in SEA, as well. It is a small hobby compared to something more mainstream like coin collecting, but it is larger than you may think. I meet dollfags in the most unlikely places, and only rarely are they old ladies with Reborns (which I respect the artistry of, even if they unsettle me.) The world is ultimately a kinder place than we'd like to admit to ourselves, because it's easier to look at the harshness of everything and close ourselves off for safety's sake... but there is a lot of joy to be found in letting people be part of our worlds, and letting ourselves be part of theirs. As the doll meetup showed here yesterday!

4chan strips all exif data including rotation data. Opening in an image editor and telling it to save in such a way that exif dat is overwritten or removed usually solves this. Cropping the image even a bit, rescaling it, etc. typically do this in paint.

Thank you to all the anons that came to the meet. I wasn't expecting much of a turnout, so I'm incredibly grateful you all came. It was super cool to finally meet some of the regulars (and you lurkers, too) and spend the day hanging out, talking dolls, taking photos, and generally having a good time. I'm even more grateful we all seemed to get along and enjoy each others, and each others dolls, company. Meeting strangers on the internet can frequently go poorly, but this thread seems to be filled only with decent people. It's a shame some of you couldn't stay for the later meet, but given how well this turned out, there will be another opportunity at Katsucon 2025.

Also thank you to the anon that gave me the cute jacket for Akari. I'll be taking her out for photos next time we have fresh snow where I'm at.

Since this went so well, I will be offering to organizing meets at some other cons in the Virginia, Maryland, PA area.

Next month is Zenkaikon in Lancaster, PA from the 22nd to the 24th (https://zenkaikon.com) . There are no official doll meets or events at this one, so I'm hoping we can have some sort of presence despite the short notice. I'm under no delusions that anyone will show up to this one.

More like an option will be Thy Geekdom Con scheduled for May 24 - 26 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks PA (https://thygeekdomcon.com) . As previously mentioned in the thread, there's already a significant doll community presence there so it will not be out of place for us to have an unofficial (or official) meet there. Plus, we can show our support for the possible mini doll con there.

These are the cons on my horizon. I hope to plan for a doll meet at least a couple times this year, hopefully once every other month at least. If any of you anons have suggestions for other possible meets, feel free to share.

I actually haven't done anything with this wig other than brush it with a toothbrush. This wig just has great quality and requires little maintenance. The little floating hair pieces at the top are somehow rock solid and don't lose shape when pressed on.
