How much to the materials to make one cost? I'd assume the fabric and wigs wouldn't be that dear, it's the doll itself and especially the custom anime face head part I'd be worried about.

Are you going to make all the clothing yourself? Nice.

I would recommend buying a light-colored wig (brown or light blonde) and then dying it grey with a drugstore dye.
It would be difficult to fade black into a respectable color- if you bleach it it gets yellow.

About DIY dolls, I think I might start with making a figure or two, just to get the sense of sculpting.

Jumping into joints and eye sockets right away seems tough. I've seen some tutorials with solid-clay dolls, but I want to make it hollow--

Are there any resources for doll-making besides the links on /do/?

That I am, though this is my first time doing this sort of thing I think doing it all myself will make the doll more personal and somewhat special.. besides it being much cheaper.. also the clothing if bought online wouldn't be as close to what it's supposed to look like, that's even if I was able to find similar clothing that wasn't sold out.
They do make the AIR uniform for azone dolls but that as one would expect is always sold out.

Thanks for the advise on the hair, I think I might try that.
My idea for fading the hair was to leave it out in the sun, but as you said it probably wouldn't work to well.
