I'd be very upset if this were true.

Marisa works very hard to cast magic, but just pretends not to to look cool. I look up to her. It would crush my dreams of casting magic if Marisa, a human like me, didn't really put hard work into learning it.

Thanks for reading this, 4kids.

In terms of the magical, Tolkein makes everything more difficult. He left everything vague (probably intentionally), which complicates our need to establish definite rules and definitions. I wouldn't think to apply Tolkein to Touhou.

The humans aren't immortal.

The youkai just live for a really long time.

Vampires can live forever but can be killed (much like LOTR elves)

Kaguya and Mokou are immortal and ageless; possibly also that nurse chick since she's a Lunarian too?

If you're already dead you're not really immortal but you can't really die either so I guess the ghosts and poltergeists qualify.

Natural spirits are usually immortal as well; even if you destroy them they'll just be reborn eventually.

Lunarians are eternal (due to biology or technology? we don't know). Lunarians are humans.

>The youkai just live for a really long time.

Probably depends on the Youkai. I suspect at least some fall into the "eternal" category.

>Vampires can live forever but can be killed (much like LOTR elves)

Vampires are Youkai.

Tolkien's elves are symbolic; they are meant to represent what humanity would be like if they had never left the garden of Eden; radiant, eternal beings. He's got lots of norse and christian influence behind everything and he was a World War I trench veteran which fucked with his head.
