Always a pleasant surprise to see your own pictures used in the OP.
I've been struggling to find clothing patterns that fit my girl. The Doll Coordinate patterns (like the jacket she's wearing in the OP) fit, but are definitely oversized. Fine for a cute jacket like this, not so for something like pants. After some research, I found that Obitsu 11 clothing should work pretty decently as well. I got my hands on an Obitsu 11 pattern e-book, and If I can get my damn printer working I will update the anons here with the results.

>> No.45773225

>>45773188
They have their pros and cons. They are more delicate than vinyl or resin (and are also lint magnets, but that's just silicone in general.) On the other hand, they tend to pose better and have a more "seamless" look that some people enjoy. (Caveat is that some of them can... over-pose and take on a rubber-hose look with the joints if you're not mindful of it.) They also tend to weigh more, and putting clothes on them can be a chore because silicone has so much friction. Ultimately it depends on personal preference.

>> No.45773259

>>45773188
I have one. They look nice and the muscle tones can be super realistic, but maintenance is such a chore. Difficult to clean and keep clean. Permanent damage builds up over time. Can't leave out posed due to skin depressions and skeleton metal wire fatigue. Heavy. Hard to dress due to friction. Have to constantly apply baby powder to skin.

Not worth it in my opinion

lol, 100% this! searching like normal (but with miniature, small, tiny, etc. as well) is my starting point to fall down the amazon rabbit hole. then you have to rely on measurements to approximate 1/3 scale and hope you end up with something usable. like for the tea pot, capacity of 50ml x 3 x 3 = 450ml, so that falls within the reasonable size range for a normal tetsubin.

When it comes to size, what do you guys prefer?

Really small ones at 10-20? A bit taller at 30-40? Or go for the bigger side of things and aim for 50-60 or more?
I've yet to get a doll, but I don't know if I'd do with a doll that's half a meter tall, is it hard to pose, clothe and carry them? The largest figures I've owned were bulky robots with ratchet joints, and they're still short next to some dolls, and I struggle to mess around with them at times.

I like 'em big. Always have. I bought a cheap Angel Studio 1/4 just to see if I like the size but I wasn't as enamored with him as I was my bigger girls and guys. Never bought more than 1 wig for him.

I have to admit that Tinyfox is making me reconsider only buying 1/3 scale dolls. Their girls are super cute and unique.

>> No.45776300

>>45775477
i like smaller ones because they feel like little fairies instead of a small person in my home. also because i collected anime figures for years, and most of them are 1/6-1/8 size, so collecting smaller sizes feels more natural to me. it's harder to find cute clothes that are well made though, so i might get a 1/3 or 1/4 eventually

>> No.45776652

>>45775477
I've only ever seen a 1/3 doll once at a convention and her size was overwhelming (in a good way, I want at least one or two one day). My 1/4 I love but I feel very precious and careful about her, it's easiest to play with 1/6 or smaller dolls

>> No.45777378

>>45775840
Interesting, I assume whatever troubles the size might cause are more than worth it for you, do you take them out for pictures at all or do they stay at home only? I dunno if I would have the courage to take a doll like this out with me, I won't lie.

>>45776300
I've been on a diet of only figma and the occasional Transformer for the last few years, can relate with being used to small figures. Hadn't considered the fairy angle, but 30-40 seems like a very good size for a desk mate or a friend to take out on a walk.

>>45776652
I don't think I've seen any doll larger than your average fashion doll in person, aside from maybe one of my mother's old porcelain dolls that was slightly larger. I guess I could start small before going for a larger size as well, even if it would take longer.

>> No.45777447

>>45775477
I come from action figures. I hated the small size and inherent fragility of jonts at that size. A fraction of a millimeter off means a joint will be rock hard or floppy. Plus they really feel like toys, closeups in photos look awful, etc. I also wanted clothes and clothes up to 1/6 scale are pretty crappy and hard to find. Went straight for a 1/3, mostly because I liked the sculpt. But yeah big dolls. I'll get a 1/4 MDD, 2dDoll or Tinyfox one day for the same reason as >>45775840 they're just cute.

>> No.45777549

>>45775477
Like when you handle a 1/12 and the torso is stiff and you can't reach the joint you pretty much can't do anything about it, you either don't move it or pray it won't snap. Things at that scale are just not meant to physically handle, you're supposed to have them on a shelf. The only reason why action figures got popular with kids is the smaller size made them cheaper to produce. On the other hand there are people who cuddle with larger dolls. Resin is heavy and thick, vinyl frames are large enough to have screws to tighten or loosen the joints or take 'em apart or fix them at least temporarily. Companies sell replacement joints. It's just a more natural, sensible size.

official site, YAJ for scalped official stuff, trawling etsy for stuff that might fit
Azone & Parabox are other options, since they both have Obitsu-based doll lines
but bottoms are always going to be hit or miss outside of official outfits, due to the size of AP hips & thighs
one of the reasons I'm getting into doll sewing
>shoes
Obitsu 45/50 feet are roughly the same size as MSD/MDD feet, so any MSD/MDD shoes should work
for the AP-specific heel feet, those should fit any MSD/MDD heel shoes (not common since I don't think Volks makes heel feet but they are out there)

Bit of a rant here, sorry
>Even a hairdryer didn't work?
Heat/hot water often doesn't and I don't wanna melt the figure. You can't slather it in grease, either. You have to pop the joint, but what if it breaks because it's so tight? It's a catch-22.
These days you pay at least $60 for a Japanese figure. Surely they could give them a thorough check or at least take some responsibility.
I assume that because "collectors" don't fiddle with their figures (God forbid, that's something kids do) and simply drop them in a display case instead, it's just not important to make them playable anymore.
Maybe I was just unlucky but I've had to fix issues with a good quarter of my figures right out of the box, and had a couple things come apart with no prior notice.
I wanna be relaxed when I handle toys; I don't wanna have the cold sweats and pray that the figure I'm handling with velvet gloves won't snap in half. It's just so damn stressful to even turn a head or move a wrist.
I had a stronger and stronger feeling that you're really meant to pose these figures ONE time and leave them to rot on a shelf. 1/6 action figures aren't that much better. Generally speaking they make them with displays in mind, because they're not "toys" but "adult collectibles" so they can sell shitty toys for $100 a pop.
End of rant.

I'm relieved that I didn't cave under sunken costs and got all my preorders off my back. I've been wanting to make the jump to BJDs for a while. I hope dolls are a bit more active 'cause man, I just wanna pose someone and take photos.
The fact I want playability is also why I lost interest in the elaborate robot dolls from DollZone. They look so damn cool and I love cyborgs/gynoids, but they look like a nightmare to move around or play with because of so many moving parts and little props attached with magnets.

>> No.45787436

>>45787093
Don't mind if I ramble a bit too, I like sharing passions.
I fully get that, I only briefly dabbled in "collector" items with Figma and similar lines before the pandemic. Never paid more than 40 on one out of weariness, and after prices skyrocketed I dropped it entirely. Aside from my two Sabers that broke with age, I was lucky to have picked more playable ones, however I am sometimes reminded they weren't quite meant to be. BRS can't possibly hold the Rock Cannon and I won't even start on how big of a pain it is to handle the Sabers even ignoring the broken bits. Figma to this day hasn't learned thick plastic clothing sucks, or that their joints are way too fucking small to comfortably swap hands.

For this reason I never got into Gundam, I received a few built Gundam kits as gifts and they literally fell apart while standing still, only one remains fully functional and I had to glue several pieces because they wouldn't stop popping out.

It's funny, knockoffs ended up being my sweet spot for this scale after I sated the desire for "fancy" figures. On that price range oddities with the joints were something I expected and could easily fix, since unlike original figures they can be easily disassembled. The "lower" quality plastic was a lot more flexible and resilient to falls, and the quality is still better than most western action figures I found for the same price. It's almost therapeutic to give a little care to the figure after I unbox it, preparing it for play, I end up caring more than I would with a delicate perfect little thing that would only sit on my shelf.

>> No.45787559

>>45787436
>kits
Those are even worse. Kotobukiya has a new line of hyper-posable robots called Megalomaria. I love the look and the posing but my experience with kits got me to cancel. I had multiples on preorder. Even with sanding, greasing and figma-gloved hands, kits will straight up break if you play with them.
I'd pay literally any sum for a robot that posable in 1/3

>> No.45788568

>>45787093
>it's just not important to make them playable anymore.
When it comes to Figma, form -- or rather accuracy to character -- is more important than function. The goddess Madoka, for example, is the least poseable action figure you'll probably come across.

>> No.45788885

>>45788568
Yeah I think what really made me realize this was the fact that these action figure companies have been including statue pieces for certain poses instead of engineering the articulation so you could pose the figure that way. It's just something that screams "now put it in your glass case". I'm sure the majority of collectors are happy that way, but it's not for me.

Either way I am really hoping that BJDs will be different. I always wanted something I could handle freely, be it for swapping clothes or simply posing to take photos. And then if they'll ever make a Nihei-esque female robot doll that checks the right boxes for me I'll have my grail and I'll be happy.

From what I've seen, the kind of marketing he employs is strongly looked down upon in Asia. The personality cult sort of angle is more of a USA marketing strategy.

NE doll anons who wanted a doll meet (and anyone else who wants to on such sort notice, I suppose). Myself and a few other anons plan to meet at the Katsucon anime convention next month for our first official meet. We're still working on details for meet location at the convention and meet time, but as of now it will likely be on the Saturday of the con (the 17th). I'm also attempting to get the meet added to the official meet list for Katsucon but if there's enough pushback from everyone here I can forgo that. Speaking of which, it really sucks that there is so little BJD activity in Europe compared to the US. It's gonna be a very isolating hobby for me I think. My whole country had ONE doll-related store on the opposite side of the map, and it's dead. There are no meets, conventions or other BJD spaces whatsoever. On the online side, I've only found one Facebook group with a Flickr gallery and both have been dead since 2018. And I thought D&D was niche here. I'm probably one of a handful BJD owners in the whole nation.
Then DenofAngels refused to register me again. I have an account but no privileges to even view any page. I don't get it but fuck that site. Until I muster the stomach to join Reddit, Discord, Twitter or Instagram, I'll probably have to stay a guest here for a while. This general is the only place I still visit on 4chan.

Unironically, this is currently the best place for doll content and community outside of Japan right now. And it's especially the only place you can engage with others without having huge followers, chasing clout, or being a creep(ironic, I know). Reddit doll boards are all smart doll Karens and elitist resinfags, no one on twitter will talk to you on unless you have huge followers, same with instagram, and the dedicated forums like DoA have the same problem as reddit.

I've thought about starting a Discord but no one seems to have enough interest in that.

>> No.45820680

>>45820531
As OP, the reason I've heard that people don't want a discord is fear that it will take away from the quality of the threads here, or invite the usual discord shenanigans. I'd be open to running one if people wanted (I've managed servers before,) but generally speaking I think part of the reason this thread works so well is because aside from identifying each other's dolls, we're all still anons.

>>45820470

It's probably just because the people who use an anonymous siamese fighting fish forum aren't the type to use websites with accounts in general. Doll Dreaming is pretty nice in my limited experience, and the people there seem to discover any new vinyl news well before I see it anywhere else. DoA has a wealth of older knowledge that's worth preserving in my opinion, but in modern times it is... untenable to navigate, and not because it's a forum, but because it is tricky to get involved in with how it's set up. DD has a resin section as well, if I recall.

>Dolls must be CAST in polyurethane resin to professional standards. (Dolls or heads 3D-printed in printing-type resins are off-topic.)

>Open-eyed human dolls must have changeable eyes; non-human dolls will be evaluated case by case.
>Dolls must not have rooted hair. Sculpted hair must not interfere with movement.
>Dolls must have a fully rendered body that is suitable to display nude.
Over half of these come off as autistic and/or elitist bullshit. Being mass produced is apparently unacceptable for some reason, sculpted hair can't do what sculpted hair does by nature and dolls need to have accurate anatomy for reasons? I specifically prefer dolls with no genitals and minimal torso detail, so I am personally bothered by that last one.

You can say it's a historical definition, but definitions don't last forever. Back in the day plastic toys didn't exist either, yet now they're the norm.

>> No.45850988

>>45850804
Elitist sure but I'd rather have some standards then start letting in stuff like barbie or bratz.

>> No.45851128

>>45850988
That's a MASSIVE leap. What I have in mind are things such as BJD Blind box dolls that are mass produced, have no anatomy beyond basic shapes and have plastic hair that restricts movement, yet everyone agrees are BJDs.
Other things like removable eyes and wigs are a pretty understandable limitations, but still a bit pedantic.

However the necessity of them being a specific material, not being mass produced, having very specific sculpts and so on have no purpose I can identify other than gatekeeping the "prestige" of owning a "proper" BJD.
DOA is less of a "BJD forum" and more a forum specifically for very high cost artist BJDs, which might one day have been the only ones making them, but this has not been the case for years now. Their rules consider dolls that are by all means BJDs.

It's not like changing these will suddenly have people posting the likes Estrela's Falcon in the main threads.

>> No.45851304

>>45851128
>BJD Blind box
I know nothing about these but what a terrible example. I don't use that site, but I'd still ban these. I don't care if these are technically bjds, these feel more closer to figmas. Yes, I'm going to gate keep for this niche hobby. There are plenty of other more popular avenues for these action figures.

>> No.45851640

>>45850804
You'll find that there are lots of dolls that don't have detailed genitals that are allowed - it doesn't stipulate accurate anatomy, just that the body is in a complete state without clothes (many fashion dolls and action figures cannot be non-destructively unclothed and lack features like hands, arms, or feet when unclothed). I think the sculpted hair rule is honestly kind of dumb too, since they're most often done in the form of a removeable wig which is not part of the doll and thus doesn't really apply to the definition either way. I honestly don't think there's too much of a point continuing this discussion since it's just turning this thread into the same environment as the /toy/ thread, which isn't fun for anyone.

>> No.45852085

Oh, so anything small is also bad? Another thing added to the list of arbitrary grievances, the only difference between the b.boxes and their larger siblings is that their hair is plastic.

I'm sick again... At this rate I'll die before I get my doll. Been watching BJD stuff on YT to kill time. Why do people say restringing is so bad?

>> No.45853362

I wonder if it's because you need some arm strength to pull it off. Looks pretty easy if you have something to lock the elastics with.

>> No.45853952

>>45853362
You would think. You would think that. You would think it can't be that hard, but then you cut the elastic slightly too long/short and it won't work, or the thing you're using to hold the string in place slips/snaps, or the doll is large and you are strong enough, easily, in theory, but in practice the real problem is that there just isn't enough room between your arms to actually get the tension you need so you wind up holding the stringing tool with your foot while you work, and somewhere along the way you lose one or more s-hooks despite literally having a piece of magnetite on your desk to stick them to so as to prevent this exact thing happening, and then you get all the work done and realize you either did something wrong or got the tension too loose to stand/too tight to move, so you have to do it all over again actually. Or you take off the head to change a shirt and presto-chango the string zoops back down into the body and you have to do it all over again anyway!

It's easier with normal human dolls. Fantasy dolls get increasingly unnerving the more parts they have (I refuse to even try to re-string my Doll Chateau Charon,) and the centaur in specific, due to his size, actually took me three days to assemble due to various mishaps. He also broke two stringing tools in the process, and also snapped through a pair of chopsticks I was using to keep the string above the neck. On the flip side, stringing tiny dolls is a delicate art with tiny bits of string (I have one LITERALLY strung with fishing line) that will forever slip from your grasp and vanish into the doll. In all cases, you will get callouses on weird parts of your hands if you do this often enough.

I admire so many resin dolls but every time I have to do string maintenance I remember why I primarily collect vinyl. The frames wear out, crack, even break, and cost far more to replace compared to some elastic string... but god if isn't easier to just slap a new shoulder joint in place and call it a day.

Something I was always curious about - because the elastics are held with just hooks, does it ever happen that they detach from the socket when you move the joint too far one way or the other? Is there a safeguard so that this doesn't happen or do you have to be careful? Are the hooks designed to swivel?

I definitely want to put off the experience of restringing for as long as possible, but it's not uncommon to get a doll that's kicky or floppy out of the box, or simply doesn't hold poses well without sueding. I hope mine will be perfect but it's not that simple.

I suppose. The worst is when people get burglarized and a whole collection gets stolen. I can't even imagine how heartbreaking that must be.
One thing for sure is that thieves know the dolls are valuable.

Also it may seem obvious but if you don't have one, get a tripod and a cell phone mount for it. They often go on strong sales during black friday etc. I got a €95 Manfrotto for less than €40 during a sale and it's an amazing tripod. Velbon also makes amazing small tripods, I own a couple that I use as easels. It's never a wasted purchase if you enjoy taking photos, and if/when you get an actual camera you can just switch out the cell phone mount for a camera quick-release plate. The cell phone mount itself should be about 10 bucks, the Manfrotto ones are super solid.
The difference in quality between handheld and tripod photos is insane especially when you're shooting at lower speeds. Having a tripod makes shooting much more comfortable as well because your phone/camera is fixed in place, so you can adjust things within view to look exactly how you want, from the exact angle and focus distance you want, etc. It makes a ton of difference.

Comments like these make me feel like my paranoia is completely justified. If I take something of value, it stays in a closed box wrapped by a jacket inside a rather large backpack, alongside other valuables, to make sure stealing it is as difficult as possible. Said backpack never leaves my side.
I don't trust any window that doesn't either have a side made of metal, or that has metal bars on the outside, and I lock every single room in the house when I leave.

Accidents do happen, but I've never had anything major happen in all my years of outdoor photos, anon. Don't let your fear rob you of the opportunity to have fun. I've been to public parks, tourist attractions, literally dunked them in lakes ala picrel, restaurants, the literal sides of cliffs, all sorts of places, and the worst that's happened was losing something small like a hairclip, or that time Clover fell over face-first (she was fine, but for a moment I panicked.)

i don’t understand, anon—weren’t you planning to keep her for longer than that when you first decided to purchase? is this the doll in question?

(as for my sins, i keep getting tempted to buy too many miniature things, and it’s just a matter of time until i buy even more. also i don’t sew anywhere near enough even though i have a hundred projects in my head.)

I dunno if I would have the courage to put any of my dolls near such a large body of water, I won't lie, especially since I can't swim very well. Though currently the main reason I don't bring them anywhere is because my confidence has limits, while I am perfectly comfortable with saying I like dolls, actually walking around with one taking pictures would no doubt draw attention. I have brought them with me to private spaces though, like a friend's garden.

Well that and I am ashamed of having procrastinated actually making custom clothes for them, if I am bringing them out in the summer they need summer dresses dammit, and no way a vampire can go out without a wide brim hat.

My sin is that I keep taking measurements, preparing fabric, creating designs but never actually sew anything.

As for yours, I recommend thinking on it, she might grow on you. Mistakes are common in the heat of passion.
If she doesn't, you can perhaps sell her at a loss or give her away as a gift. Not ideal, but better than having something you don't want.

Sadly I live in a country where subhumans abound and taking a doll out means there's a 95% chance of someone smashing it for the lulz. Yeah, that sounds awful for you. This is a hobby of LONG lead times and super delayed gratification. There are ways around that, like by buying from local sellers on the second hand market, but based on what you're saying that would be problematic for you too since it would be used most likely. This hobby may cause you more problems than joy.

Yeah there are 200 statues, 200 nendoroids and nendoroid-likes, and one 1/6 doll by Azone which honestly looks very poor. I am very surprised that an actual BJD company didn't jump on the hype train. They gave the license away pretty freely.
They made a doll of Frieren almost immediately but not Nezuko and I suppose it's not gonna happen anymore.
