You could have people from the human city using magic, or commenting on what the demon lord said recently on the radio etc.
At worst you can exposition dump from a character conversation about what they were doing during the portals opening.

If you want to be really to the point, you can just say something like

or

People are already somewhat familiar with portals/monsters being in the modern setting, so you only need a few sentences/details for people to know what you're talking about. Anything more is just stuff that will make your setting distinct and stand out against others. Whether that's important to a short story is up to you.

It's not that interesting. Writing that made me realize i did very little with that setting specifically. Having MGs in a University would open up possibilites for magical libraries and humans studying magic while mgs study our ``boring´´ subjects. The reader will pick up on that if you show this by what the characters observe. Even something as simple as the characters taking a booth at a restaurant and noting some of the other couples present indicates to the reader that there is some level on integration. Show not tell, sometimes. Does that make sense?
