Don't you guys feel shame/embarrassment for taking pleasure in such meritless pasttimes? It's not even like any shit on the board takes any talent to make.

>> No.4536173

Says the guy who posted "samus chillaxin.jpg"

>> No.4536183

Well it is called a past time for a reason. It is for passing the time. If I have time to pass it means I have nothing else to do. Therefore there is no need for there to merit involved is there?

It's not trolling like takes any talent either.

>> No.4536203

I guess responding to troll threads is a pastime too, huh?

>> No.4536207

>>4536173

Oh, that was just a joke for /v/. Just posting a random image. Actually, I don't even get what that's implying. That's a terribly weak lash-out from someone who's getting really defensive.

>>4536183

But why don't you spend on your time on something that'll make you feel a little more fulfilled? I don't mean WORK and stuff, exclusively. But enjoying something that is just an all around better experience.

Not trolling. Genuinely curious. A 'How The Other Half Lives' kind of thing. If I wanted to troll, I would've just posted this link and nothing more: http://kotaku.com/5484581/japan-its-not-funny-anymore

>> No.4536242

Subjectivity has a certain extent.

I don't find most /jp/ related hobbies particularly fulfilling personally, but there seem to be people here who find them enjoyable.

You can't gauge what other people will enjoy by what you enjoy.

no

>> No.4536264

>>4536245

I didn't mention enjoyment. I'm not saying that you guys enjoy stuff that is unenjoyable. It's just terrible in that literally anyone can produce things of this quality, yet you guys obsess over even minute details in it.

>> No.4536274

As if most "normal" past times require any talent. Out of curiosity, what alternatives would you suggest?

>> No.4536268

Uhh, your troll is obvious to the point that you will only get troll and/or no exceptions responses.

>> No.4536283

>>4536274

I mean talent on the role of the producer. Pretty much any artform you can consume has stuff that's of a higher quality than anything you guys spend your time on, here.

If I take pleasure in a pastime, it is, by definition, not meritless.

I'm productive from 8am to 6pm every weekday, so I feel that I am entitled to spend the remainder of my time on whatever makes me feel good, and therefore feel absolutely no shame or embarrassment over it.

That implies a scary degree of acceptability in pretty much every pasttime ever. Which isn't true.

If you actively spend your free time on (for example, not directly applying this to you) terribly written VNs or fetishistic discussion of a bland cast of supernatural girls, it reflects on you. It's definitely something to feel embarrassed about.

What, because I didn't name specific alternatives? Shit, read a book, for one. Play a video game that takes a bit of creativity or initiative. Watch a movie that doesn't revolve around the concept of moe.

You do realize more than 90% of books are garbage, no better than the average VN, right?

No, I was saying you don't know how to read.
The irony here is that you reply "read a book".

I enjoy eroge.
I also play western vidya, run my own tabletop rpg, and read a couple books a month.

I like to devote myself to many hobbies rather than make a hobby of telling people that their hobbies are pointless.

90% is a very very generous estimate. Honestly, I'd place it much closer to 99.99%, give or take a nine or two.

>>4536373

Alright, I don't exactly count the kind of people who like /jp/ as my peers, but I have no problem withstanding judgement, whether it's tinged by bitterness or not.

Good book: Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami, Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys, The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster

Good film: Me and You and Everyone We Know, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Resevoir Dogs, Ashes of Time, The Departed

Good video games: Shadow of the Colossus, Planescape: Torment, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia

>> No.4536428

What, you think the only hobbies people have are the ones they talk about on this board?

Sorry, this isn't /b/ or /v/ where people just talk about whatever they feel like, people try to stay on-topic for better or worse most of the time here.

I guess there are some people here who obsess over things, but hell there are people like that in all hobbies. Hell just take a trip over to /v/ and check out the fucking ME2 threads that have been on the front page for around 2 months now.

>> No.4536468

Well, done right it could be entertaining at the very least. And by done right, I mean doing almost exactly as the game did, and leaving everything vague and focusing upon the Colossi battles.

>> No.4536485

>>4536453

Let me ask you, why would someone come to such a board to badger them about why they discuss something?

Even if you get such an answer, it won't enrich your life at all. You obviously know we won't stop enjoying what we enjoy, so all you could possibly obtain is that useless answer. So why come here?

When you reach your answer, you will have found ours as well.

>> No.4536494

>>4536468

Yeah but the game was only as great as it was because of the format's unique ability to immerse the player through interractivity. You wouldn't feel as isolated/excited/sad watching John Travolta do all this shit on the big screen as you would experiencing it all yourself (well, through the proxy of a game character)

>> No.4536512

>>4536494
Hence, entertaining, not good.

>> No.4536510

>>4536485

Curiosity. Plain and simple. Slight pity and anger mixed in, but those are unimportant.

>> No.4536519

I see two parts to your argument, which are related: 1) Other forms of entertainment are "superior" to visual novels (presumably what you have been referring to--/jp/ also encompasses doujinshi video games and figurines). 2) >It's not even like any shit on the board takes any [skill] to make.

I have to disagree with your second statement. It's not fair to belittle the time and effort artists, writers, musicians, and programmers put into making visual novels.

>> No.4536524

>>4536510

And now you've reached your answer. Why does one read a VN? Curiosity and fapping.

Congratulations.

if you're going to ask i have a lot of things to enjoy, i really don't think or hope to think people just do limited shit with their time but then again this is 4chan

>> No.4536585

>>4536519

/jp/ tends to focus on doujin games that are considered more 'otaku games' than actual 'indie games', so yeah, I would those and figurine collecting amongst the more shameful hobbies of /jp/.

And I'd disagree. When you produce with the intention of dissemination, you're open to criticism and opinion. It's just concept by intelligent design, it's a text. And all texts are liable to criticism. And VAs are a pretty poor format in general, too.

>>4536556
... wait, that makes no sense. Books have merit, are fun and are a hobby. And what is fun and has merit but isn't a hobby?

>>4536524

... but why does one enjoy a VN enough to consider it a pasttime worth discussion?

Why do you consider a board about VNs to be a subject worth discussing?
