Every Touhou has something going for them be it a fetish, design, plot, or power/hax gimmick. Sanae has none of the aforementioned things. She's nothing more than second rate copypasta of Reimu (minus Reimu's unique personality that's rare in protagonist). Sanae has a cliche "good girl" personality that you would expect to find in a retro JRPG protagonist. She's not very good looking. And again, her powers and role in the story are copypasta of Reimu's.

She doesn't deserve her popularity.
