My impression was that the kid!Shiki represented everything Shiki was like before the accident, and the kid!Shiki traded himself away to bring Shiki back to life, or something like that.

In a way, Shiki saying something like "It doesn't matter what happened before the accident, I'm going to focus on the present"?
