Key of Life was a wild ride. Despite it being 2 hours long, it never drags. Enjoyed the unpredictability in every scene. Watching the story click together is like watching someone working on a puzzle. Kagawa was truly the centerpiece of this work, as expected from a great actor like him (wish that scandal never happened). Uchida's screenwriting was also good, did well to keep tabs on all the characters. I'm curious about the Conan sequel he wrote, wonder how it's gonna connect with it.

I was unprepared for Dead Run when I first watched it. Powerful, but not an experience I expected when I put a SABU film on. This film is a turning point for him. While still subtly present there, he started to move away a bit from the comfort zone of his old trademark style, and experiment with different genres. You'll understand what I'm taking about when you watch the rest of his works. It also might be because it's an adaptation of a novel, but I never read it, so I have no idea who different it is from SABU's adaptation. Dead Run was SABU at his most dark imho. The thing that really got me about this was just how much it escalated. I thought I was watching a coming of age story set in a quiet town with a bit of class conflict but whilst it starts that way it sure didn't end that way. The massive tonal shifts in the final act is still SABU's good ol' style seen on his previous works, which really made me like the film even more.

Conan movie feels like a big festival that happened out of nowhere. Watching it was such a joy for someone who loved Key of Life. It's just so full of love for Conan and Key of Life. You know, as I was writing this post, I remembered the anime Odd Taxi and how it felt like something that Uchida would have made.
>Key of Life was a wild ride. Despite it being 2 hours long, it never drags. Enjoyed the unpredictability in every scene. Watching the story click together is like watching someone working on a puzzle.
So, do you think Uchida's filmmaking style is similar in some ways to that of SABU? By the way, the song that was used as an ending is a banger. I listened to it every day for a week or two after watching the movie and still do so now and then.
>Dead Run
Now that I've had some time to think about it, I like it even more, but everything about the older brother in the first half still makes me feel conflicted.

I finally got around to watching Kurosawa's Penance and just finished it. Overall, it was a rather disappointing drama. One of the reasons for this could be that I had such high expectations for it. It's a drama directed by Kurosawa and released on WOWOW, based on a book written by Kanae Minato. What could possibly go wrong here? The first episode is fantastic. And it (along with the drama's conclusion) reminded me of some Kurosawa movies that I enjoyed. I'd love to see the first episode expanded into a feature film. The second and fourth episodes are flat out bad. Third is alright, I suppose. The best character in the entire drama is Bear Girl. And the fifth episode is a bit of a mixed bag, while having a great finale, everything that was before it is not as good. The production values are excellent, and the entire drama feels like a movie. Some of the episodes have an excellent, eerie atmosphere with interesting psychological elements. Interesting structure, with almost standalone stories in each episode that are mostly thematically connected.

>One of the reasons for this could be that I had such high expectations for it.
This is a mistake. I'm a Kurosawa fan, but when it was first announced, I knew it wasn't going to be on a par with his films simply because it's a tv drama, and yes, even if it's not terrestrial but satellite, a WOWOW drama. The writing was obviously aimed at a tv audience. Even if it was beyond a lot of tv direction, generally, it looked like a soap opera. There are moments during Penance where it felt like the restrictions of the tv medium came through, with the camerawork, sound design, and musical score feeling a little shoddier than in Kurosawa's films, which to be expected. Still, what Kurosawa did with light, framing and color, and how it all served to show how trauma shapes the bodies and lives of the characters over time, was truly stunning. The first episode might have fooled us, but the rest should have been within expectations. I loved it because I went at it knowing it's a tv drama, so compared to the majority of dramas from that time, it eclipsed most. There's a lot of Kurosawa charm there to put it even higher than them, too. The stories varies in qualities, though, the Aoi Yuu and Ando Sakura episodes were the best. I also felt the final episode resolved the mystery of the original murder in a mostly satisfying way. Kagawa is a phenomenal actor, as always.

To the anons who recommended me Swallowtail Butterfly after my viewing of All about Lily Chou Chou one year ago, thank you so much. What an insane movie. Iwai's Love Exposure a decade before Sono in a way. I loved it from start to finish. You really need to live it, it's not a movie you can talk about.
And starring Ayumi Ito that I liked a lot in All about Lily. Really, it couldn't get any better.

My favorite aspect of Swallowtail Butterfly is how Iwai builds out this whole unique alternate Japan that is this cultural gathering of so many different kinds of people all to explore identity and people coming together to find themselves, to forward themselves, their art, their passions, picking each other up until they ultimately crumble down and lose themselves in the money.
If you haven't yet, watch all Iwai's works, by release order (even if it's too late for that now).

It's Datsuryoku Times, a comedy show. It's not the first time they used a celeb who had scandal'd before. Arita Teppei, the host of the show, also works in the production of side, and he definitely welcomed the idea, that's the way he is. He idolizes the late Antonio Inoki who built his legendary career with outrageous ideas and controversy, he must be having a field day with all the backlash Kinoshita is receiving right now. Actually, he was already laughing his ass out during the episode. This is the first time in years I've seen articles about the show trending this hard.

I can't but agree with you wholeheartedly. The mix of genres is really incredible, it all seems so fluid, so natural, from a social drame to a honk kong flick to a cyberpunk movie and so many more, what a journey. I'm really surprised to see such a movie from Iwai when his other movies seem so down to earth. I love Lily Chou Chou or Picnic but they almost seem to be from another director, even if I can see a few similarities here and here. Pretty sure he inspired guys like Satoshi Kon or Sono.
I also watched a few other movies from him but they were okay, not groundbreaking imo, Hana and Alice and April Story. Just good. But I will definitly check his other works.

Actually, Kon, Sono and Iwai, in addition to many other 90s filmmakers like Miike and Tsukamoto were influenced by Ishii Gakuryu's Burst City. If you liked the mix of genres in Swallowtail Butterfly, especially the cyberpunk part, then you should watch it. Another film of his that has a mix of genres is August in the Water.
>But I will definitly check his other works.
One of Iwai's earliest works is Undo and I think it was a very clever concept, especially from a filmmaker who still hasn't reached his peak at that time.
Also, I'm not sure if you watched it yet, but his A Bride for Rip Van Winkle will blow your mind.

I guess there's just a hint of similarity, the same with a number of other filmmakers, but ultimately, they felt different as both filmmakers' works had their own distinguishable atmosphere. There's something about Uchida's works that screams "UCHIDA" no matter how similar they might be to SABU.

Glad you enjoyed it. It's my favorite thing in the entire Conan franchise, too. For the last few days, I have had a strong urge to watch something from Nobuhiko Obayashi. I liked the sequel a little less, but it's still a fun, quirky movie. It's a shame the brothers weren't as cool as the yakuza characters. For some reason, sequel also felt a bit more like drama than a movie compared to the first one. Not that it's a bad thing in this case. While watching it, I also thought it would be cool to see some sort of tournament between all hitmen within the organization to determine who is the best hitman. I've been listening to らぐなろっくnonstop since watching the first movie yesterday. Such a catchy song.

I get it. I mean, the action sequences and serious parts are good, especially in the first movie, but that's not really what these movies are about for me. I think one of the main reasons I liked these movies, if not the main reason, is because of the nice, comfy SoL scenes and Mahiro with Chisato. To be honest, I think I'd like these movies even more if they were just about SoL with these characters, without any seriousness at all. Just Chisato and Mahiro fooling around and doing whatever they want. I wish there was some kind of spin-off that was specifically about it, some drama or something. By the way, are any other movies from this director worth watching? Legendary Hit-Man Kunioka looks interesting, and if I understand correctly, Mahiro and Chisato make cameo appearances in it.

Every time I re-watch it, it feels like a fever, wet dream. It's outlandish, it's avant-garde, the 80s Japan atmosphere, the same classical music he's been using since his debut work Love Songs, lots of scenes would make me exclaim what the fuck is happening among all the screaming from Sono and the people around him and the camera shaking, but my eyes are still glued to the screen to see what Sono gonna shit out next. And he does shit out next, literally. There's a scene where he takes a shit on camera, he then starts fiddling with his penis. It's not just nudity and public defecation, there's trespassing, property damages, self-injuring, molesting and mobbing, and all happening for real and not scripted, it's basically a crime. And don't get me started with that Kappa and isekai part, or when he was getting his head shaved while screaming like an absolute rabid maniac, that shit is iconic. Young Sono is an explosive cannonball. Then the second part starts and it's a life of a young university student Sono, who lives with his family (Sono's real family) in a house on the outskirts. Very subdued, very realistic, almost like a documentary, but still has the avant-garde feeling to it, until it slowly goes back to the Sono madness at the final parts of the film where he messes up the house and go on a rampage in public while running a field chalker. Is Sono genius or crazy for making a nearly 2 hours-long film out of this? All I know is, without this madness, Sono would not be where he is today. A Man's Flower Road is the most beautiful piece of shit in cinema.
